Celebrating Sue Joss's Retirement
"SALUTING A HEALTHCARE LEGEND! A trailer and 12 employees — that’s what Sue Joss had when she took over as CEO of BNHC in 1994. Today, as Sue prepares to retire, BNHC has three clinics, 40,000 patients and 704 staff that all have one thing in common — a legendary healthcare leader dedicated to providing care to those who need it most. Sue was celebrated at a breakfast in her honor this week, where friends and colleagues thanked her for three decades of keeping Greater Brockton healthy, safe and whole!"

A Brief History of Brockton
with Willie Wilson Jr.
Willie Wilson Jr., Professor, Local Historian and fellow Brockton citizen, appeared on Our Brockton Episode 33, hosted by Mayor Sullivan. Mr. Wilson and Mayor Sullivan touched on key Brockton history moments.
Brockton was settled in 1649 when Myles Standish met with Sachem Massasoit of the Wampanoag at Sachem Rock (located in modern-day East Bridgewater). During this meeting, the land was purchased by the colonists, as interpreted by the colonial signers: Myles Standish, Constant Southworth, and Samuel Nash.
Brockton was originally part of North Bridgewater, established in 1821, but it separated as Brockton in 1874 before finally incorporating as an official city in 1881.
Mr. Wilson shared that the first person of color documented in Brockton history was a man named Scipio who owned property and paid poll taxes as early as 1744. Following the abolition of slavery and the northern migration of formerly enslaved people, there was a significant increase in the Brockton African American population, specifically between 1821 and 1881.
Mr. Wilson concluded his segment by emphasizing the positive relationship between all ethnic groups at the start of Brockton's history as a city. There was a great sense of peace in this community as opposed to the potential tenseness in the rest of the country at the time. He further encouraged youth POC to recognize their right to be here and to continue being the best individual they can be to honor those who had come before with a lesser access to resources.

Please take a moment to review an official statement from the DBA regarding the City Council's recent vote in favor of a punitive ordinance regarding the unhoused population, as well as an example of a community discussion tour that we facilitated in January of this year. This community tour was meant to be a brainstorming of solutions with legislators and community partners that could be used by our local government to help adopt positive chances and support systems in our city.

Climate Can-Do: Help Generate Less Winter Waste!
After the white snow engulfs much of the green around us, there are still ways to have a positive impact on the environment. Here are some precautions you can take to waste less and emit less pollution this winter season:
- Bring a reusable mug: reduce plastic waste by checking out which local coffee shops will fill your clean, personal mug. Some shops even offer small bring-your-own-cup discounts.
- Reduce your use of chemical deicers like salt: Salt may melt away ice on roads, but it also introduces harmful chemicals into bodies of water, including sources of drinking water. Try mixing a smaller amount of salt with sand to help to increase friction.
- Turn your thermostat down a few degrees: Waste less energy and save on your power bill. Chilly? Keep an extra layer of clothes handy and keep your blinds and curtains open during the day to let sunlight warm your home. If your home feels drafty, arrange a free home energy assessment from Mass Save. (We all contribute to this fund in our electric bill.)
Stay warm this winter and look for small ways you can have a positive impact on our environment!

Having just concluded the time period in which we hosted multiple groups daily (which started in November!) we want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to this amazing group.
