Historical Tidbit
Kings Department Store
| |
On the corner of Torrey Street and West Street stood Kings Department Store. Michelle Bessette remembers: "My dad managed the camera dept in the 60s. I recall sitting at the lunch counter ordering the weird pizza. Also met Rex Trailer, Bozo and Elvis’ Cadillac there. And remember the room with the bins of small toys? If we were good, that was our reward. "

Brockton Resident Marie-Françoise Felix Juneteenth Experience
Bridgewater’s Juneteenth 2025
Sat, Jun 21
1p-5 pm
University Park at Bridgewater State University
Free parking 351 Great Hill Drive
"I attended one of the best parochial schools in Boston and lived in Brockton for 37 years; however, did not learn about the significance of Juneteenth until I attended the third Juneteenth celebration co-sponsored by Bridgewater Communities for Civil Rights, First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church-Bridgewater, and Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice. A colleague invited me to this celebration held at Bridgewater State University. I was pleased to have the opportunity to attend this wonderful event. I learned that those enslaved in Galveston, Texas were not aware of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, until two years later in June of 1865. Their emancipation on June 19, 1865, about six months following the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution (1/31/1865), was called Juneteenth. It is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The day was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when the 117th Congress enacted, and President Joe Biden signed, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. This is why this important historical moment is called Juneteenth. I also learned that the first Juneteenth flag was designed in 1997 by Ben Haith, a Boston native. The first Juneteenth celebration I attended was a memorable day filled with food, craft vendors, and live entertainment, including BSU’s West African Drumming Ensemble. This year I am happy to contribute my Juneteenth-inspired headband, hats, and a hand knitted blanket to the silent auction.
I look forward to seeing my family, friends and the planning committee members at Juneteenth in Bridgewater.
~Marie-Françoise Felix"

Climate Can-Do: Thrifting a Healthier Planet
Fast fashion may be easy and cheap, but did you know that in the United States, nearly 13 million tons of clothing end up in the landfill each year? Understanding the environmental impact of purchasing choices has us looking for solutions.
Benefits of Thrifting
- By donating and purchasing second-hand clothes, you are helping reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. With more and more clothes being made out of synthetic materials, textiles are taking hundreds of years to decompose. Buying second-hand doesn’t just extend the life cycle of clothes, but also prevents toxic materials from entering our ecosystems.
- Thrifting helps reduce wasted resources. Clothing production requires thousands of gallons of water. For example, a single pair of jeans uses about 1,800 gallons of water in its production process.
- If the sustainable benefits weren’t enough, thrifting also saves money. Second-hand stores sell their donations at a discounted price. You can find vintage, good-quality clothes for less. There’s also a large variety to choose from, and maybe you’ll find your new signature piece!
Alternatives to Thrifting
If buying second-hand isn’t for you, please do your part in keeping clothes out of landfills.
- Donate your used clothes: homeless shelters and youth homes, as well as thrift stores, get your clothes to individuals who need them most.
- Repurposing your clothes is a good way of being a conscious consumer, but it can also be a fun craft and a money saver. For example, cut up old T-shirts and use them as cleaning rags, or consider embroidering an old tank top and giving it a new life.
- Learning how to repair clothes also extends their life cycle. Darning socks, sewing a rip, or mending holes helps your favorite pieces stay in your closet instead of the dump.
Leading a thrifty lifestyle helps reduce waste, but it can also be a fun way of rediscovering new styles or old clothes you forgot about.

Connection
There are some people who carry wisdom. I search out Brené Brown because I have struggled so in relationships. So I share her now, knowing her words will help all who choose to listen.
“You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” ~ Brené Brown
“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” ~ Brené Brown
“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” ~ Brené Brown
“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren't always comfortable, but they're never weakness.” ~ Brené Brown

Here is the TED that introduced her to the world. I hope you have a lovely week of connection. ~ Jacquie
