Brockton South Middle School Honors and Remembers Fallen Heroes
Last Spring, Jim Stapleton and Amanda Gomez, faculty of Brockton South Middle School, came across an old, worn wooden plaque hanging on the fence at the school basketball court. Inscribed was the caption "Never Forget" and the names of two Brockton heroes: Anthony Palermo Jr and Donald E. Fisher II. Anthony Palermo Jr was a Captain in the U.S. Army, and Donald Fisher II was a Corporal in the U.S. Army. Both men died serving their country in the U.S. War in Iraq.
When deciding how to best restore the plaque, Stapleton and Gomez were inspired to do something more than simply returning it to its spot on the fence. They decided to remember and renew the legacy of these Brockton South Middle School alumni in the hearts and minds of the current students, faculty, and local community. On September 10, 2024, the school assembled for "Heroes Day," and together students, faculty and staff, School Committee members Anna Oliver and Tony Rodrigues, Superintendent Priya Tahiliani, Councilor Phil Griffin, State Representative Rita Mendes, Department of Public Works Commissioner Pat Hill, Mayor Bob Sullivan, Senator Mike Brady, and members of the fallen heroes' families commemorated Captain Anthony Palermo Jr and Corporal Donald Fisher II. An address was given focused on their courage, selflessness, and impact on the United States. Speakers took the opportunity to remind students that it is because of these two brave soldiers that they are free to assemble and go to school safely.
In an interview regarding the purpose, planning, and legacy of the ceremony, Jim Stapleton shared that one goal of his in bringing the community together for Heroes Day is to bring all the stories the kids are told of great men and women to life. The school's motto is "Once a dragon, always a dragon," and when the children are given opportunities like this to see and learn about the "dragons" who came before them, it shows them that they, too, are capable of great things. In addition to the ceremony, the original plaque was remade in metal and placed on the fence of the basketball court and an additional plaque was made and placed in the South Middle School Hall of Fame. Students in the 8th grade had turned in essays about the fallen heroes, and the names of the three winners were included in the plaque's inscription. Finally, starting in June 2025, a scholarship in the names of Capt. Palermo and Cpl. Fisher will be available to members of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC).
Thanks to Jim Stapleton and Amanda Gomez, Anthony Palermo Jr's and Donald Fisher II's sacrifices will not soon be forgotten. They will live on in our hearts, memories, and the halls of Brockton South Middle School. The ceremony was recorded, and you can watch via The Brockton Channels.

Historical Tidbit: Ellis Brett School | |
"The Ellis-Brett School is the last remaining wood frame schoolhouse in the city of Brockton. It was built in 1892 and added to in 1911. It is of the bracketed style with slate hip roof and decorative window moulding. Although the school is not included in the city's long range plans, it does have an adequate side site and is well treated. Thus it may go on use for an indefinite period of time." - John R. Wilson, 1985, documentation courtesy of the Masachussets Historical Commission.
Elllis Brett School closed in 1983, its students absorbed into the Hancock Elementary School. Although the building caught fire in 1985, it still stands today.

High Fives for The Charity Guild
September is Hunger Action Month, and The Charity Guild has a fun and creative way for you to get involved. It’s called “High Five for $5.” A $5 donation helps to buy enough food for 10 meals for TCG’s Food Pantry. For the rest of September, you can take action and help Brockton fight hunger by donating $5, sharing a “High Five” photo on Facebook, and tagging The Charity Guild, your friends and family in the post.
A nonprofit organization and member agency of The Greater Boston Food Bank, The Charity Guild began their mission to combat food insecurity in 1971. Today, TCG serves over 23,500 people every year, increasing community access to healthy and nutritious foods through their Food Pantries and Home Delivery Program for seniors and the homebound. The TCG main Food Pantry is located at 501 Main St, Brockton MA and is open Tues 10a - 12p, Wed 1p - 2:30p, and Thurs 10a - 12p.

This September’s “High Five for $5” initiative has already drummed up buzz. The Brockton Fire Department took to Facebook to share High Fives next to Fire Engine Five, tagging and nominating the City of Brockton, Brockton Police Department, and Brockton Veterans’ Services to participate in the trend too. Additionally, Brockton Farmers Market shared FB photos from the last Friday Market participating in “High Five for $5” and spreading awareness about food insecurity and TCG’s mission to the community. It is through this collective participation in Hunger Awareness Month and through the generous donations and volunteer work of the community that The Charity Guild is able to provide for those in need.
To contribute to The Charity Guild’s mission, make a donation in goods or funds, volunteer to help, or learn more about how TCG is fighting food insecurity in Brockton, visit their website www.thecharityguild.org.

We do not live in a just world, and so there is violence, there is war.
But if every day, we hold back our fear and give love, we move closer.
When we can respect each other and work toward a just and a sustainable society. We'll get there together. ~ Jacquie
