WOMEN OF DISTINCTION EVENT CELEBRATES WOMEN WHO TELL OUR STORIES - SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
The Bronx Chamber of Commerce in partnership with The Bronx Chamber of Commerce Foundation hosted the annual Women of Distinction Luncheon on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 11:30am at Villa Barone Manor, 737 Throggs Neck Expressway Bronx, NY. For 18 years, the Women of Distinction Luncheon has recognized outstanding women leaders for their contributions to the Bronx and New York City, culminating in a scholarship program to support young women pursuing a degree in higher education.

“The Women of Distinction Luncheon provides a platform to continue the mission of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Foundation and support the future of our borough,” said Lisa Sorin, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce. “Investing in our community, especially our young women, is vitally important to the Chamber, the Bronx and New York City and builds on our mission of creating economic development opportunities and driving transformational change. I am grateful to the funders and supporters of this work with a special appreciation for Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts for their sustaining support of this initiative.”

The 2023 initiatives have been enhanced with a generous gift from Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts, which has consistently supported the work of the Foundation and Bronx Chamber of Commerce with an expressed commitment to corporate social responsibility and building stronger communities. The program assists in sustaining the mission of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce Foundation; dedicated to fostering business education, training, mentorship and leadership opportunities for small & mid-size Bronx businesses, economic development and equitability-oriented nonprofits, and other community organizations.

The 2023 Women of Distinction Luncheon honors educator and film maker, Vivian Vázquez Irizarry, noted for her recent work on the history of the South Bronx, Decades of Fire. 1010 WINS Reporter, Juliet Papa will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. Read full Press Release, click here.
COMMERCIAL DISTRICT TOUR WITH
COUNCILMEMBER KEVIN RILEY - DISTRICT 12
The Bronx Chamber of Commerce joined Councilmember Kevin Riley from Bronx District 12 for a commercial district tour with NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Kevin Kim. During the tour of Wakefield and Edenwald the delegation met with business and property owners to bring in-person business services and also address streetscape and transportation concerns voiced by the community.

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce has deployed Small Business Resource Network services to the area since 2021 and looks forward to our continued partnership of service to businesses in the northeast Bronx. For more information email: sbrn@bronxchamber.org.
MOTT HAVEN WELCOMES MARY J. BLIGE & CHEF OMNI
Celebrating Women and Diversity: Mott Haven welcomes Mary J. Blige and Chef Omi.

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce team joined area businesses, young people, and community leaders in welcoming two legends to the South Bronx - Mary J. Blige and Chef Omi. The visit organized by Chamber members, The Lit. Bar, and ChocoBar Cortes and Rosa's at Park celebrated community highlighting women's history and empowerment month.

These businesses have been integral to the Avenue NYC - Mott Haven program and continue to assist in bringing focus to the South Bronx. LISA SORIN HONORED BY SANKOFA HAUS & UPTOWN MELODY FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Lisa Sorin, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce was honored during a joint program by Sankofa Haus - Mott Haven and Uptown Melody during a Women's History Reception this week at the acclaimed South Bronx venue. Sorin is the first women and Latina to lead the Bronx Chamber of Commerce. The evening brought together business owners, entrepreneurs, young people, and highlighted an area that the Bronx Chamber has been working in to deliver additional services in partnership with Third Avenue Business Improvement District.
LEGISLATIVE & ADVOCACY UPDATES
New Trash Set-Out Times Begin April 1 - Effective April 1, 2023, businesses that place waste at the curb* for collection have two setout options:

  • If using a container with a secure lid, a business should place waste at the curb 1 hour before closing, or
  • If putting bags directly on the curb, place waste out after 8:00 PM.
 
*This does not apply to businesses that have waste collected from a loading dock or other off-street location.

Bronx Chamber of Commerce Releases Business Sign-on Letter in Support of Governor Hochul's Criminal Justice Reform Package.

The Bronx Chamber of Commerce is soliciting business sign on in support of Governor Kathy Hochul's Criminal Justice Reform component of the NYS budget. This includes bail reform, additional funding for training, discovery, and gun violence prevention.
