- B&H Builders Group Corp will be closing Villa Avenue from Bedford Park Blvd to East 204th Street from 12/26/2023 - 01/26/2024 from 9am to 4pm. The road will be closed to enable boom trucks to work on a new building.

Christmas Tree-cycling!
Residents of the Bronx should place their tree out at the curb for collection beginning Friday, January 5, 2024. Collection will run through Saturday, January 13, barring delays that may be caused by winter weather events. As a reminder, these Christmas trees are collected separately from trash and recycling, and patience is appreciated as pick-up may not occur immediately; trees are collected with other trees, and the Department scout trees at the curb to make efficient routes.
Before your Christmas trees and wreaths can be collected, you MUST:
- Remove ALL lights, ornaments, and tinsel. Remove stands from trees and metal frames and wires from wreaths.

Make sure they are NOT wrapped in ANY plastic or placed inside a plastic bag.
- Leave them at the curb between the designated dates (January 5 - 13).
After collection, the Christmas trees will be chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions and community gardens.
Artificial Trees
Take apart your tree to recycle the base and trunk (pole) with metal, glass, plastic, and cartons on your recycling day. Remove all lights, ornaments and tinsel before placing at the curb. Otherwise, set it out as garbage on a regular collection day.
Make Your Own Mulch
Use evergreen boughs and branches from your Christmas tree as mulch to enrich the soil in your garden or street tree beds. Just cut off the smaller branches of your Christmas tree and remove the twigs from evergreen boughs. Lay three to four inches of these trimmings over the bare soil around street trees or in your garden. After removing the branches for mulch, you can take your tree to MulchFest or leave it out for our collection.

Public Hearing for City of Yes for Economic Opportunity
Save the date: on January 24, the City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing regarding City of Yes for Economic Opportunity. Commercial Lease Assistance Program Virtual Clinic (1/16/24)
The NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) presents this free virtual clinic to our New York City small business community through our legal vendor Brooklyn Legal Services Corp. Associated (“Brooklyn A”).
Through this and our upcoming free workshops and legal clinics, SBS' Commercial Lease Assistance Program will assist those who struggle with commercial lease related issues.
These clinics allow you to have a one-on-one session with a Brooklyn A attorney to discuss any of your legal questions or concerns regarding your commercial lease.
Upon registration, you will be provided a Calendly link to select a specific time for your appointment. Please be sure to pick the 30 minute window that works best for you.
Who Should Attend This Clinic:
- Small business owners looking to negotiate a new commercial lease agreement
- Small business owners seeking advice or counsel on a commercial lease matter
- Small business owners experiencing harassment , overcharges or other non-litigation actions from a landlord

HOPE 2024 will take place on Tuesday, January 23
from 10 PM until 4 AM the following day.
Every January, thousands of volunteers across the five boroughs participate in NYC’s annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE). Over a single night, volunteers canvass streets, subway stations, parks, and other public spaces across the city to identify individuals living unsheltered.
Outreach programs bring services directly to those in need, as well as alternatives to traditional shelters, such as safe havens and stabilization beds.
You can volunteer to survey homeless individuals if you are:
- 16 or older (those under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian)
- Willing to work from 10 PM to 4 AM, regardless of the weather.

How to Prepare for Your Renewal
Annual renewals for Medicaid, Child Health Plus and the Essential Plan have restarted in New York. New Yorkers who are enrolled in Qualified Health Plans may also need to take action to renew their health insurance each year.
Here are some things you can do now to get ready.
1) Sign up for text alerts
Sign up to receive SMS/MMS Text alerts from NY State of Health so you don't miss important health insurance updates, including when it's time to renew your coverage.
To subscribe, text START to 1-866-988-0327.
2) Make sure your address is up to date
Make sure NY State of Health has your current mailing address, phone number and email address so they can contact you about your health insurance. To update your information:
If you enrolled in Medicaid through your county’s Medicaid office or through New York City’s Human Resources Administration, contact that office to update your address and contact information.
3) Take Action
When it is time to renew your health insurance, you will receive a letter from NY State of Health or a renewal packet if you enrolled through your county’s Local Department of Social Services (LDSS) or the New York City Human Resource’s Administration (HRA). This letter/packet will let you know what you need to do to renew your coverage and how much time you have to respond. Follow the instructions right away.

Fair Fares NYC applications are open!
Fair Fares NYC is a City program created to help New Yorkers with low incomes manage their transportation costs. Using the Fair Fares NYC MetroCard, eligible New York City residents receive a 50% discount on subway and eligible bus fares. Pay-per-Ride, weekly unlimited, and monthly unlimited options are all available.
Fair Fares can also provide 50% off MTA Access-A-Ride paratransit trips. Pay-Per-Ride, 7-Day (Weekly) and 30-Day (Monthly) Unlimited Ride options are all available for those using the Fair Fares MetroCard on subways and eligible buses.
Access-A-Ride customers do not use a Fair Fares NYC MetroCard; their discount is applied automatically to their Access-A-Ride trips once their Fair Fares and Access-A-Ride accounts are linked

File Your Taxes with NYC Free Tax Prep
Work with a knowledgeable IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparer to complete an accurate tax return. There are 4 ways to file and more than 130 sites in all 5 boroughs.
Choose how you want to file.
1. In-Person Tax Prep Sit down with a volunteer preparer.
2. Drop-off Service Drop off your tax documents and pick up the completed return later.
3. Virtual Tax Prep* It’s In-Person Tax Prep but online!
4. Assisted Self-Prep* Do your own taxes online using free filing software but phone or email a volunteer for help.

Applications open today for the Sanitation Foundation's 2024 NYC Trash
Academy, designed for busy New Yorkers who want to learn how to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable city.
The 4th annual NYC Trash Academy, (formerly known as Zero Waste Academy), is a free 10-session educational series developed and taught by experts from the NYC Department of Sanitation and the private sector, and covers the environmental, social, and economic impact around waste management. Upon completion of the program, participants will be well equipped with the knowledge and resources to create change in their lives and communities. Join us to get a better understanding of the active role you can play both personally and professionally.
The curriculum will explore topics such as:
- the past, current and future landscape of waste in NYC
- the origins of American “throwaway culture” and an introduction to circular economies
- the role that waste plays in the health of our water system
- new initiatives to keep waste off our sidewalks
- and a focused look at food waste, the most significant diversion opportunity in our waste stream

Building owners are legally required to provide heat and hot water to their tenants. Hot water must be provided 365 days per year at a constant minimum temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat must be provided between October 1st and May 31st, i.e. "Heat Season," under the following conditions:
Day
Between the hours of 6:00am and 10:00pm, if the outside temperature falls below 55 degrees, the inside temperature is required to be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
Night
Between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am, the inside temperature is required to be at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

DHCR has filed the Notices of Adoption required under the New York State Administrative Procedure Act (SAPA) to amend various regulations in the Rent Stabilization Code, the Tenant Protection Regulations and the State and New York City Rent Control Regulations. These documents or their summaries, where applicable, have been published in the New York State Register on November 8, 2023.

What is Culture Pass?

How to Report Elder Abuse
In 2011, the New York State elder abuse prevalence study found that 76 out of 1,000 older New Yorkers experienced elder abuse during a one-year period. This abuse is in the form of physical abuse, verbal abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and sexual abuse.
Elder abuse is frequently not reported by those experiencing it. There are multiple reasons someone might stay or refuse help, including cognitive diseases such as depression or dementia, fear of retaliation, shame, immigration concerns, cultural factors, and more.
DSS Adult Protective Services (APS) helps New Yorkers 18 years and older regardless of income, and among other mandates, helps individuals experiencing elder abuse. APS advocates and works to ensure that individuals receive the services and support they need to live in the community safely and with dignity. Civil Service Exams Schedule
The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is accepting applications for the following civil service exams. So don't delay, apply today!
How to Apply for Civil Service Exams:
Through DCAS’s Online Application System (OASys), you can apply for and take certain exams online. This can be done on a computer and now also by using a smartphone or tablet. To apply in-person at one of our Computer-based Testing and Application Centers, schedule an appointment on OASys.
Testing Centers are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays.
