Fencing

Brookfield Academy’s fencing season has started! The first meet was hosted by the Libertyville-Vernon Hill’s fencing team in Illinois on Saturday, November 5. Due to scholarship testing, only two fencers from BA attended, both from men’s sabre.

Sophomore Ben Zou competed in his first ever meet this past weekend. The first meet is often tough for new fencers, and Ben improved in every bout. In direct eliminations, Ben was against a fencer ranked more than 30 places higher than him.

Senior Connor Artley, the sabre captain, won two bouts in pool rounds, and he went against competitors who later won silver and bronze. Connor tied for the 32nd seed going into direct eliminations, and he won his first match 15-14. Connor’s second direct elimination round was against the first place seed. He finished 27th.

Brookfield Academy’s fencing team attended its first team meet of the year, hosted by Stevenson High School, Illinois. BA fenced teams in the south division of the Great Lakes High School Fencing Conference.

On the men’s sabre team, Connor Artley and Ben Zou won three bouts against U-Chicago Lab School, one against Homewood-Flossmoor, and three against Gwendolyn Brooks. Overall, Connor won five bouts, and Ben won two.

The men’s epee team fenced the same schools. Isaac Jansen and Camden Pifel won one bout against Culver, one against U-Chicago Lab School, and all four bouts against Gwendolyn Brooks. Both teammates won a total of three bouts against Marian Catholic and four against Homewood-Flossmoor. Isaac won a total of seven bouts, and Camden won six overall.

Marina Matson fenced at her first meet this weekend and represented the women’s epee team. She won a total of three bouts, two against Culver and one against Homewood-Flossmoor, which is incredibly good for a first meet.

This past weekend, three men’s foil fencers competed at their first meet. Aryan Kapur, Kai Suh, and Gus Jurgens did exceptionally well for their first meet and won a combined total of seven bouts against the competing schools. Aryan won two bouts, Kai two as well, and Gus three.

Madison Kob represented the women’s foil team. She won a total of five bouts against the competing teams.
