ATTENTION CB5 RESIDENTS/BUSINESS:

New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) will introduce new metered parking for commercial vehicles in the Flatlands-Fairfield Industrial Business Zone, leveraging Pay-by-App technology to improve payment options and compliance.

The new metered parking will be implemented along the block faces on Flatlands Avenue, between Erskine Street and Fountain Avenue.

This pilot program addresses the shortage of legal truck parking spaces by providing regulated and convenient parking solutions for truck drivers taking federally mandated rest breaks.

Additionally, this program seeks to minimize overnight truck parking in residential areas. The new metered block faces will be programmed as follows: 24-hour Commercial Metered Parking, Except Sunday Pricing options: $30 per day, $10 per 8-hour increments Installation is tentatively planned for February 2025.

If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to email the District Office at Mperkins@cb.nyc.gov with the subject:

East New York Industrial Business Zone RFP

New York City Economic Development Corporation, on behalf of the City of New York is pleased to release a request for proposals seeking proposals from qualified parties for the long-term lease or purchase and development and/or activation of two parcels located in the East New York Industrial Business Zone in Brooklyn.

The RFP includes two sites:1) the Sackman Street Site located at 173-191 Sackman Street (Block 3677, Lots 1-10) and 2) the Williams Avenue Site located at 116 Williams Avenue (Block 3699, Lots 1,9,10,12-20,31,33,34,116).

The Sackman Street Site offers approximately 19,000 square feet on a paved lot of adjoining parcels.

The RFP follows the May 2023 announcement of over $500 million in new funding from the City and the Metropolitan Transit Authority to improve the public realm and bring complete ADA access to the Broadway Junction Station and new commitments from the City and NYCEDC to advance real estate initiatives in the East New York IBZ.

Since the announcement, NYCEDC has worked closely with community stakeholders, technical assistance providers, nonprofits, businesses and Council Member Sandy Nurse, to support local development to the IBZ that is grounded in community priorities and vision.

NYCEDC plans to select a developer for one or both Sites on the basis of factors stated in the RFP which include, but are not limited to financial feasibility, responsiveness to the project goals stated in the RFP, the respondent’s qualifications and experience, and the proposed positive economic impact on the East New York IBZ and community.

DEC has extended the deadline for the Community Survey to March 30. Please share with your networks!

DEC’s Office of Environmental Justice has an available grant opportunity to fund projects that implement and address ambient air pollution mitigation strategies.

Grant applications are due by 3pm on Wednesday, January 29. I think it would be great if orgs from this committee could collaborate on one or more applications that would serve the borough based on our recommendations! If your org is interested and I can help support/convene/make connections, please let me know.

Air Pollution Mitigation Grant Fact Sheet

Air Monitoring Grant Request for Application

There will be a hearing coming up on “Air Quality and Last-Mile Deliveries” in NYC Council’s Environmental Protection Committee. On Jan 28 at 10am in the Committee Room at City Hall, they will hear two bills from Council Member Aviles – one would require DEP to create an “indirect source rule” that would reduce emissions from these facilities, and the other would require DEP to designate “heavy-use thoroughfares” in each borough and install air monitors at at least two intersections and all adjacent parks and playgrounds. Because it’s an oversight hearing, testimony can also cover the issues of air quality and last-mile generally.

You can sign up to testify here.

Dear Colleagues,

We still need your help!

The night of Tuesday, January 28, 2025, when DSS-HRA-DHS will conduct its annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) Survey, is fast approaching. HOPE is a point-in-time survey undertaken each winter that helps the City estimate the number of unsheltered New Yorkers living on the street. The results gathered through this survey provide the City with valuable information that helps determine how to allocate resources to best serve New Yorkers in need. A lot of volunteers have already signed up, but we still need more help to ensure that HOPE 2025 is a success, and there's still time to sign up! We especially still need volunteers at sites in Queens and the Bronx!

If you're interested in participating, please go to nyc.gov/hope to learn more and to register. Registration will be open through the day of the 28th, but we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible!

On the night of HOPE, volunteers help out by canvassing streets, subways, and other public spaces. Volunteers are needed from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on the night of January 28. Just a few hours of your time will help us in our ongoing efforts to support New Yorkers experiencing unsheltered homelessness and encourage them to take that first important step to come off the streets and subways and accept the vital services and supports they need and deserve.

Compensatory time may be available to you for participating – consult with your Agency and supervisor to see if this applies.

Please visit nyc.gov/hope to learn more and to register. Your participation is essential to helping us address the challenge of homelessness and support some of our City's most vulnerable residents as they get back on their feet.

Thank you,

Molly Wasow Park

Commissioner

Department of Social Services
