NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION:
Please be informed of the upcoming expansion of Citi Bike in Brooklyn Community Board 5, which was announced last December and includes parts of Brownsville and East New York.
As you may know, Citi Bike’s Phase 3 expansion is a multi-year growth of New York City’s successful Citi Bike program that will more than double the size of the service area, covering all of Manhattan and significant portions of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and increase the system’s fleet to over 40,000 bikes. Since the program launched in 2013, New Yorkers and visitors from around the world have taken over 260 million Citi Bike rides, demonstrating that bike share is an efficient, healthy, and affordable mode of transportation.
In advance of installing new stations in this area, DOT will be conducting outreach and planning this summer and fall. Engagement includes in-person and online education and feedback collection and meetings with community stakeholders, including presenting to the community board in the fall.
I want to highlight the upcoming opening of our feedback portal, the first step in the expansion planning process. This feedback portal allows people to identify locations where they would like to see Citi Bike stations, as well as areas not suitable for a Citi Bike station. Here is the link to the feedback portal web page that you can share with your contacts via email, newsletter, or social media
https://nycdotprojects.info/project-updates/feedback-map-open-1 .
The portal will be open for feedback starting Monday, June 2, 2025. Our planning process will also include identifying technically viable space for bike share stations on our streets and sidewalks. We place stations in accordance with rigorous technical siting criteria that takes many factors into account, including accessibility, street and sidewalk width, parking, truck loading, as well as proximity to street furniture and underground utilities. Stations are sited in commercial, recreational, and residential areas to ensure equitable access throughout the service area.
Following this initial outreach and planning stage, we are aiming to present proposed station locations to the Community Board and other stakeholders in September, followed by additional outreach, notifications and station installation. Please let us know if you have any questions or would like to set up a time to meet with our team regarding Citi Bike and the expansion planning process.
