Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged residents to live up to their purpose and potential by uniting to help others. That legacy is honored during the MLK Day of Service, where the Brooklyn Democratic Party hosted seven volunteer events to distribute food and giveaway Covid personal protective equipment (PPE) and virus test kits to the community. The borough-wide events were in collaboration with the Brooklyn Young Democrats, Bay Democrats, RBG Democratic Club, Independent New Democrats (IND), the Arthur Ashe Democratic Club, the Shirley Chisholm Democratic Club, and the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association. |

Mayor Adams Appoints Affordable Housing Leadership Team
[Jan 30th] Eric Adams announced the team who will lead his administration’s affordable housing strategy. Jessica Katz will lead the team as the city’s chief housing officer. Adolfo Carrión Jr. will serve as commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Most recently, he was a partner at Abrams, Fensterman, Fensterman, Eisman, Formato, Ferrara, Wolf & Carone, LLP. He also served as law secretary for the Kings County Democratic Committee. Carone earned a B.S. from St. John’s University and a JD from Brooklyn Law School.
Dawn Miller, First Deputy Chief of Staff
Most recently, she was Vice President for Policy and Partnerships at Coord, a mobility technology company partnering with cities across the country.
Madeline Labadie, Deputy Chief of Staff
Most recently, she served as the director of strategic initiatives at TLC, where she led Vision Zero efforts and priority projects for the commissioner. She has also worked in policy and research roles for the Hotel Trades Council and Council Member Brad Lander.

Governor Hochul Appoints Director of the New York State Office of Gun Violence Prevention [Jan. 26th] Governor Kathy Hochul announced the appointment of Calliana S. Thomas as the Director of the New York State Office of Gun Violence Prevention. As part of the Governor's actions to prevent and reduce gun violence throughout New York State, the OGVP will identify and bring together key partners in the community and law enforcement to identify steps that can be taken to curb gun violence in New York State.

Hochul Announces Nominations to MTA Board [Jan. 8th]
Governor Hochul announced Janno Lieber has been nominated to serve as Chair and CEO of the MTA Board and Elizabeth Velez has been nominated to serve on the MTA Board.

Hochul hires public safety, housing and economic development advisors [Jan. 4th]
Tania Dissanayake, a former director of the New York City mayor's office of legislative affairs, became the deputy secretary for housing. Marcos Gonzalez Soler, who most recently was a director at the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, became public safety secretary. And James Katz, a former deputy Manhattan borough president, became deputy secretary for economic development and workforce.

On Jan. 16th, Nikki Lucas was voted as the Democratic nominee for the 60th Assembly District Special Election.
Nikki Lucas will now run for Assemblymember on the Democratic ticket for the special election that will be held on February 15th. The 60th AD encompasses East New York, Starrett City, Brownsville, and Canarsie. "We are pleased to have held a successful nominating meeting, and are confident that Nikki, as the Democratic Party candidate, will be a formidable contender in the special election," said Brooklyn Democratic Party chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.

Congressman Jeffries stated, “Nikki is a proven community leader with a track record of improving the quality of life for the residents of East New York and Brownsville. She has successfully fought to preserve affordable housing, expand access to high quality health care, educate our children and provide services for our seniors.

Democratic state legislators in New York released a congressional redistricting map Sunday that redrew House lines to give Democrats as many as three more seats.
The Brooklyn neighborhoods in GOP Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’s Staten Island-based district shift enough to turn it from one President Donald Trump won by 10 points to one Biden would have won by about the same amount. On Long Island, the seat held by Rep. Lee Zeldin (R), who is running for governor, also gets bluer.
The map is expected to be voted on this week and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

NYC to Pick Up Two State Senate Seats Under Albany Redistricting Plan
New York City is also slated to get more representation in the state Legislature under the redistricting proposal unveiled late Monday night, shifting two out of 63 State Senate seats to the five boroughs and amplifying the power of Asian and Hispanic voters.
The legislative measure adds a district in Brooklyn that’s plurality Asian and another in Queens that’s largely Hispanic, reflecting New York City’s population and demographic shifts over the past decade.

The New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislators Inc. (The Association) has announced the 51st Annual Legislative Conference will be moved to April 8th-10th, in-person in Albany for the safety of all our guests.
Theme: Moving Forward with a Demand for Democracy.
Strict COVID safety protocols will be implemented during the conference and required to be observed by all participants.
