Tai Ji Quan (sign up required)
Tai Ji Quan Movement for Better Balance is a community-based fall prevention program. This class will be taught twice a week and participants will learn eight modified Yang-style Tai Chi forms over a 6-month time frame. Participants report improved balance and strength, improved flexibility and mobility, and a reduced risk of falls by 55%. Participants are asked to wear comfortable athletic shoes and light, breathable exercise clothing. This class will run every Monday and Tuesday from August 26th, 2024- March 2025.

Narcan Training (sign up required)
Learn how to use Narcan to stop an opioid overdose. Each participant will take home a Narcan kit. This training is presented in partnership with Luminis Health Pathways and Anne Arundel County Department of Health. Sign up at the front desk.

Sound Meditation Workshop (sign up required)
Experience the peace and tranquility of sound meditation. Playing songs that calm the soul and bring peace to one's spirit, Dara Kamilah Thomas will perform music that is gentle, like a breath of fresh air. This meditative program hopes to bring you to a centered and peaceful state physically, mentally and spiritually.

Walk With Ease (sign up required)
Walk With Ease is a free six-week self-management, community-based physical activity and arthritis education program. While walking is the central activity, this program also includes arthritis education, stretching, strengthening exercises, and motivational strategies. Participants will meet together at BPSC once a week, and participate in a self-guided session twice a week. Participants must be able to stand on their feet without pain for at least 10 minutes. This class will run every Tuesday from September 17th through October 22nd.

The senior activity center has an exercise equipment room with a treadmill, bike, elliptical and weights. Before using this room, members must first attend a free one-time safety orientation session, taught by Louise Mulvey.

‘Sensible Self-Care for Women’ (sign up required)
Mary Crowner will lead this new workshop designed for senior women. Mary will provide information on available resources for older adults and discuss the importance of self-care. Come enjoy some light refreshments and learn tools to help you improve your physical and mental health.

Trinket Box Workshop (sign up required)
Join Maddie as she works with you to paint and decorate your own trinket box! She will introduce new painting techniques to bring your vision to life. These can be filled with jewelry, odds and ends, and whatever else you choose. Select your own colors and design to make it uniquely yours- creativity is encouraged! Join instructor Scott Clarke for a morning of fun and drawing! Scott will help each participant enhance their drawing skills in this new workshop. Get ready for some high energy exercise as Ryan presents EDM (Electronic Dance Music) Dancercise! Advance Care Planning (sign up required)
University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is excited to provide education and assistance to senior center members who are interested in advance care planning such as MOLST and advance directive forms. Case manager Dawn Baker, MSN, MS, RN, CCRN, CHPN, has over 40 years of experience as a registered nurse, and currently works as the palliative care case manager in Population Health at UM BWMC. Dawn will be available at the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center on a monthly basis to assist older adults in completing these documents.

‘Queen Bees’ Movie
Come enjoy some popcorn and join us for a screening of ‘Queen Bees,’ featuring an all-star cast of Ellen Burstyn, Jane Curtin, Ann-Margret, James Caan and Christopher Lloyd. While her house undergoes repairs, fiercely independent senior Helen temporarily moves into a nearby retirement community, and discovers it’s never too late to make new friends and perhaps even find a new love.

Brooklyn Park Library Technology Assistance
Staff from the Brooklyn Park Library will be available to assist members with their smartphone or tablet. Bring your device and get tips on how to use your device or troubleshoot issues. Library staff can also offer reading recommendations and discuss services available at the library. No appointment needed.

Anne Arundel County Fair Van Trip (sign up required)
This trip location will be to the Anne Arundel County Fair for Senior Citizens Day! The van will depart the senior activity center at 9:30 am and return at 1:30 pm. Celebrate Senior Citizens Day at the fair, and enjoy free admission for older adults over age 55, the Anne Arundel Senior Centers’ Variety Show and Senior Bingo. Participants are responsible for the cost of their purchases and meal. Sign up at the front desk, spots are limited! Sign up for this trip begins September 3rd. *Note: This trip may entail walking on uneven surfaces.

Staff from Maryland Legal Aid will be available to meet with members to answer any questions they have and help with any information they may need. Maryland Legal Aid is dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and basic human rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. No appointment needed.

Maryland Access Point Outreach
Information and Assistance staff Saes Kim from the Department of Aging & Disabilities will be on site once a month to assist center members with resources and services. Saes will be able to assist with applications, provide referrals to local services, discuss housing options, and provide education on community resources. No appointment needed.

Marshalls & Double T Diner Van Trip (sign up required)
This trip location will be to Marshalls in Glen Burnie and Double T Diner in Pasadena. The van will depart the senior activity center at 9:45 am and return at 1:15 pm. This fall marks 5 years since the expansion and renovation of the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center. Since that time we have added many new members and new programs to Brooklyn Park. In honor of Senior Center Month in September, we want to share our appreciation for the members of Brooklyn Park with our first ever 'Member Appreciation Week.' Senior Activity Center Information
- All volunteers are invited to record your volunteer hours in the Volunteer Log Book at the front desk. This record book is how we keep track of volunteer hours for the year.
- Brooklyn Park Seniors, Inc. is a fundraising board made up of elected members of the center. Their mission is to supplement the county budget for supplies, services and programs offered at the Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center. The Brooklyn Park Seniors, Inc. meets the first Monday of every month at 10:00 AM. Meetings are open to all center members. *Note: September’s meeting will be held on Monday, September 9th.
- BPSC sends our monthly newsletters via email, with upcoming center programming and community events. See staff if you would like to be added to our email list.
- We are on Facebook! Like our page and check out our Facebook page under 'Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center.'
- Meals are served at the senior activity center Monday-Friday at noon. Call the Nutrition Program at (410) 222-6869 from 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM to reserve a meal one week in advance. In an effort to support the ongoing and future work of the Congregate Meal Program, voluntary donations are encouraged. No eligible person will be denied a meal if unable to donate. Each congregate meal costs $5.25.
- Transportation to the senior activity center can be scheduled one week in advance through the Anne Arundel County Office of Transportation at (410) 222-0022.
- The Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center offers free membership to individuals 55 and older who are active, self-sufficient, and able to function independently. For more information, visit us in person or give us a call at (410) 222-6847 for additional information about classes and activities.
- Department of Aging & Disabilities staff from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) are available to discuss your questions about Medicare and Medicaid, supplemental health insurance, medical claims management, Medicare Open Enrollment, and more. Call the SHIP office at (410) 222-4077 to schedule an appointment.
