Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

If you only know knitting as an observer, you might not realize what looks like a solitary pursuit is really about giving back.

It is about sharing, and not sharing just anything.

It is sharing something that you created, with your mind, your hands and your heart.

That’s one of the things we love so much about this community. How often do you come by to find just the right yarn to make something for a grandchild, or friend, for a spouse, or son or daughter? How often do you sign up for a class so that you can make just the right surprise for a loved one?

It is that time of year when we start thinking about gifts, but we also must remember those less fortunate. We have the ability to turn our craft into a force that can literally change people’s lives in a very simple way—we can make hats
(scarves welcome.)

So again this year, let’s show those who don’t know what our community stands for: Let’s knit beautiful, warm hats and give them away.
Let’s stand together and tell our neighbors, we knit, and we care.

Here is a note from Kathy who is part of our community and spearheads this project at The Blue Purl.... we will collect your donations at the shop.

Hats for the Homeless!

Do you have some old wool lying around the house that needs
to be used up? We have the solution!

This is a great way to give back to those less fortunate in our
area – and a fun and easy project! There are some easy
patterns on line, or a member of the staff at the Blue Purl can
provide pattern and wool ideas if needed!

Please contribute a hat (s) when and if you can – we will be
collecting them through mid November. We would so
appreciate it – and so will the men, women and children who
receive our beautiful creations!

As in prior years, the hats will be distributed to people through
Nourish New Jersey in Morristown – formerly The Community
Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center. It is so nice, particularly
this year, to be able to help others.

The hats you have donated in prior years have been absolutely
gorgeous! So much nicer than anything we could buy in a
store! Thank you so much for your help and generosity!

PS - Scarves work too if you’re not a hat person!

BROOKLYN TWEED Pop-Up Shop
Our next shipment of Brooklyn Tweed should be arriving early next week! We expect to get Arbor and a re-order of the Shelter colors that sold out so quickly. If you've signed up for the Svenson class already, we'll reach out as soon Arbor arrives so you can pick your colors!

As always, we'll put the Brooklyn Tweed shipment online as soon as it gets here, so feel free to purchase from the website. While we host the Pop Up shop, we're able to take additional special orders for any colors or bases within our collection.

Check out our class lineup planned around this wonderful rustic, American sourced & dyed yarn from a company that has gone out of its way for the LYS community. We have 7 classes at various levels of experience from sweaters to accessories that show off the beauty of Brooklyn Tweed. One sweater class (Weekender Light) starts in November, while the rest will kick off our Winter session in January. The classes are geared towards using Brooklyn Tweed yarn purchased during our Pop-Up. If you plan to sign up for these classes, please purchase or place your special order for the quantities & color needed during our Pop-Up. Once the Pop-Up ends (early November), we can no longer accept orders, even if you signed up for a class.
Not ready to try a class but want some ideas?

The Afton scarf/wrap by Jared Flood is one of our favorites and can be made using Peerie, held single, Loft held double or Shelter to make a sizable wrap. The lace and cable textures give this accessory elegance and warmth.

There's still time to sign up for our first class Brooklyn Tweed class, Andrea Mowry's Weekender Light, designed with Brooklyn Tweed Loft in mind.

This starts in November, so if you'd like to join this class, please purchase or place your sweater-quantity order soon
Brooklyn Tweed Classes
The Weekender Light by Andrea Mowry

This class is spaced apart to give everyone a lot of knit time, and holiday time.
Designed in Brooklyn Tweed Loft

This design was originally in worsted weight and for Andrea it was her most popular design ( that's saying a lot for The Shift designer.) She said that designing this in fingering weight yarn was due to an overwhelming email requests from knitters. So she chose Loft for the task.

"This sweater is knit from the bottom up in the round until the yoke. The yoke is knit flat and then joined at the shoulders with a 3 needle bind off. Sleeves are picked up and knit down from the body for a completely seamless sweater!"

Svenson by Jared Flood

designed for Brooklyn Tweed DK weight Arbor

This is a beautiful classic cabled sweate. It's designed by Jared Flood, founder of Brooklyn Tweed. In a recent interview he said...

"We believe that knitting design can be beautiful, fashionable and modern, while retaining its link to traditional and historic roots. I love when old and new come together, and that’s a driving force around here for sure."

and we believe this sweater design is a perfect example of that.

"the honeycomb texture of the central panels incorporates purl stitches to unusual effect, and the flanking horseshoe cables playfully experiment with scale. A moss stitch ground and half-twisted rib edges complete the study in textures, putting Arbor through all its paces. Modified raglan construction ensures a tailored and comfortable fit."

NJ WOOLWALK 2020
Annie M. your name was drawn by a fellow customer for the Blue Purl Raffle basket!! You should have heard from us to come collect your prize. Congratulations and we hope you have lots of fun crafting in the months ahead.

Thank you to all our Woolwalk visitors this past week. We loved seeing old friends & meeting new ones. We hope you all had as much fun getting to know the yarn shops of NJ.
What's New?
Woolfolk New 2020 Colors & FALL Collection
Woolfolk's new colors are gorgeous shades of blues and grays that remind us of the cliffs & coasts in every 19th century British novel we read in high school. Along with the new colors, Woolfolk has released 7 new patterns for the Fall 2020 season. Three of our favorites are the Svelmo hat with its twisty, winding cables in Tynd, the Faeno sweater with a beautiful textured yoke in Far & a classic unisex cabled turtleneck, Tuno in Far.
Cirro by The Fibre Co.
Wendy just started on the Cirro shop sample & we are loving the texture and color play. This is the picture of fall cozy. Can't wait to see this wrap up!
Kasmir by Jennifer Weissman
Remember when Jennifer Weissman gave us a sneak peak at our last zoom event? Well, that pattern is now live on Ravelry and it's 25% off. Kasmir is a "beginner-friendly scarf" that features geometric bands using a mosaic stitch. That means, only 1 color is used at a time (no stranding work) and the pattern is created by slipping the stitches. If you tuned into our zoom event with Jennifer, you may remember that this scarf was meant for her husband. What a stylish guy!

Jennifer recommends Tosh DK for a generously sized scarf or if you prefer a more narrow, shorter piece, we like mYak Tibetan Cloud for its stitch definition & drape.
Upcoming: Casapinka Glamping Blanket KAL
Casapinka is dropping a new blanket KAL soon. It will be available in Cat, Baby, Dog, Lap, and Adult Sofa sizes next month. It will be part of an ongoing pandemic KAL in The Sharon Show FB page and in the Casapinka Ravelry Group. "

Also, every copy of Amirisu comes with a Ravelry download code for the entire magazine.

Fair Isle Weekend
Mary Jane Mucklestone's Fair Isle Weekend book will be arriving in early November and we are taking preorders now. This 104 page, hardcover includes 8 gorgeous colorwork patterns for accessories and yoked sweaters designed by MJ Mucklestone
"Fair Isle Weekend takes you on an exciting trip to Fair Isle, a windswept island in Shetland, famous for its traditional colourwork knitting. During her many trips to Fair Isle, Mary Jane has been fascinated and inspired by the island's rich textile traditions, learning about Fair Isle knitting by looking at old textiles and sharing stories and knowledge around a cup of tea. Now, she has created a gorgeous collection of designs which she would take with her for a weekend trip to Shetland when a carry-on bag is all you take with you."

CROCHET AWAY
Nicole Colella aka Fierce Hook Design walked in the shop during Woolwalk last weekend with a drop dead gorgeous poncho on. It's called the Rainy Day Poncho -and turns out she designed it! She calls it a "modern take on a granny square." So we love local designers - and Nicole's from Randolph :) so we are thrilled to highlight her this week!

The short story: She has a degree in fashion, worked in the garment district in NYC and learned to crochet on her commute.

The  Wyvern Tail Shawl is asymmetrical shaped and she uses this awesome scale stitch or crocodile stitch in her design. Great for the dragon lover in your life! We all have one.

Her Cool Hand fingerless gloves are designed in linen stitch for both warmth & stretchability. Super stylin! Love the leather around the wrists on this one. The blue one that is linked has a crocheted trim cord.

For more of Nicole's work check out her website. Follow her on instagram @fiercehookand on Facebook.

Happy Crocheting!

Susan in her Casapinka Pullover Shawl
Susan made Casapinka's All Points South - PULLOVER SHAWL - don't call it a poncho ... if you don't already know, the designer known as Casapinka is hoot. Susan used Marianated and some other "lost the ball band" yarn - We're guessing MadTosh :) It looks great on you Susan!
Fair Isle Mitts from the class
Here are a couple examples from the Fair Isle Mitts class that just wrapped up with Keri. Mostly made in Harrisville's Shetland (great for colorwork) with some of the solid colors in Cumbria Fingering. Erica, Barbara & Carrie - these are beautiful. Love how the front and backs are different. So much learned on this little project! Great Mitts ladies!
Pat's 2 Lori Versacis
First up: Pat's crescent shaped Number 10 wrap by designer Lori Versaci stops you in your tracks - the back is AMAZING with its color play - and the front likewise with the stripes continuing longer! She made this with ten colors of Koigu. Stunning!
Pat's second Lori Versaci wrap is sequences, named from the technique of sequence knitting, a two color knit technique used to make it. We believe she used the Plymouth Worsted Merino Superwash on this. Love the pink edge. They're both gorgeous Pat!
Bounce
Barbara's Bounce blanket by Tin Can Knits is perfect with the Marianted Gradient she used. This lovely stripes and lace pattern has endless possibilities! So fun Barbara!
Holy Zauberball!!
And here is Barbara's Easy Baby Cardigan by Knitting Pure & Simple. It looks stunning done in a Zauberball! Love little baby sweaters done up a bit differently and this one is perfect. This is a top down sweater- the little version beginning at the hood. Beautiful Barbara!
Sweet Blanket
Barbara C. (three Barbara's in this section!!!)made her Ennismore Lap Blanket with Berroco Vintage Chunky. It's so soft and pretty and a lovely reversible pattern "which brings to mind a freshly-ploughed field." Wonderful Barbara!
