Academics

Exchange Program Application is Open: Due Oct. 19

The Exchange Program will offer five-week student exchanges to schools in Botswana, Hungary, Peru and Scotland this year. The application for exchange is now open and available in OnBrooks > Groups > Exchange Program Information. Please review this exchange information and the OnBrooks topics online to learn more. There will be an opportunity for family questions about Exchange on Friday in the Robert Lehman Art Center at 3:15 p.m. Please be in touch with Director of Exchange Lisa Saunders for more information about the Exchange program.

Student Life

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month the dining services team, including Sous Chef David Florenio P’28, treated students and staff to delicious house-made beef empanadas and horchata (a rice, cinnamon and milk-based drink) during lunch on Friday!

Family Weekend

Campus will remain open over all long weekends throughout the academic year. Boarding students who wish to remain on campus do not need to sign up to do so. We will assume they will remain on campus unless they submit a weekend leave request. 

Students wishing to depart campus for any portion of Family Weekend may depart after their last commitment on Saturday afternoon (including afternoon activities). They must return to campus no later than Oct. 7 by 9 p.m. Beginning Sept. 28, students will have the option to submit a “Family Weekend Leave” request via REACH.

All Community Read

On Nov. 8, we will welcome Evelyn Addo-Wallace ’98 to campus as our All-Community Read speaker. Evelyn will spend time with affinity groups in the morning before a required evening program for the community. The required, evening program begins with an all-community dinner, by advisory, at 6:15 p.m. Addo-Wallace will speak to the community from 7 to 8:30 p.m. about equity and bias in medicine as well as the significance of Henrietta Lacks. The program will end around 8:30 p.m.

Individual School Photos

On Sept. 27, Mark Lawrence Photography came to campus to take individual school photos for our students. Parents/guardians will receive a proof of the photo to their email address during the next two weeks. If you wish to purchase individual photos and did not receive a proof in your email, that means that your student did not have their photo taken. There will be a photo retake day in November. Order individual photos here.

The JSO celebrated Rosh Hashanah in the Keating Room last night. Happy new year!

Student Travel

Brooks will offer bussettes to Boston's Logan Airport and South Station at the start of each break. Families should plan their travel from either South Station or Logan. Please be in touch with Associate Director of Student Affairs Cora MacKenzie with any questions and review the School Breaks Planning Details to help you make plans. Families are responsible for transportation back to campus. 

International students: Need plans for Thanksgiving break? Here are a few options:

Support the Community Service Program's Drive

Brooks’ Community Service Program’s Community Giving Tree Fall Drive has begun! Watch a special message from the group. Now through Oct. 16, the group is collecting sneakers, brand-new clothing, winter clothes, gift cards (Old Navy, Walmart, Amazon, Target), small toys (2T-teen), sweatshirts, children's clothes, and pj’s to benefit those served by the local non-profit. All items purchased from this Amazon Wishlist will go directly to children in need this holiday season. Thank you for your support!

The art department's "Work of the Week" is by stagecraft carpentry students Sofia Benayoud '27, Ivy Gong '25 and Emma Otieno '27: "1980’s Radio - Bucket of Junk Challenge." See it in the "Arts in Progress" exhibit.

Join us in the Robert Lehman Art Center gallery for a student exhibition, “The Essence of Character, Integrity and Passion,” this Family Weekend. The exhibit, featuring more than 150 students’ artwork, opens Friday at 3 p.m. and will remain open to the public through Nov. 23. Come check it out!

Ghostly Goodies is Coming Oct. 31

In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out about the various ways that families can be a part of our annual Ghostly Goodies Halloween event. Whether it's donating donuts, volunteering at the lunchtime event or buying items from our Amazon wish list, we are grateful for your help with this treat for our students and employees.

Here are the three ways you can participate:

• Visit our SignUpGenius to pursue our volunteer opportunities, as well as to sign up to bring items to campus on Oct. 31.
• Purchase candy or other Halloween treats for the day from our Amazon Wishlist. Stay tuned for more details about the wishlist in future newsletters.
• Venmo a contribution to Aybike Crott (@Aybike-Crott) to help underwrite the event and purchase donuts (always a hit!) and other items.
