The Parent Health and Wellness Corner
Welcome! During orientation, Director of Psychological Counseling Judith Werner, Director of Wellness Steph Holmes (shown above) and Director of Health Services Tracey Costantino introduced themselves to the new fourth- and fifth-form students. (The trio will be introducing themselves to the third form during the students' Self in Community classes in upcoming weeks.) The faculty explained the support services available to all students, noting their roles, contact information and the value of having confidential support services available to students:
  • Werner and Holmes provide emotional support through individual counseling with students, as well as develop and lead outreach programs to the entire community.
  • Costantino provides nurse practitioner services and supports the nurses, who also work directly with students to care for their physical health needs.

After the introductions, there was a lively discussion about what the new students are nervous about and what they miss from home . . .
  • Making new friends
  • Feeling awkward
  • Academic work load
  • Missing everyone from home, the food and their pets!

The teachers then talked about how homesickness and nervousness can feel and can be exhibited physically and emotionally . . .
  • Stomach aches, headaches
  • Tiredness
  • Anxiousness, sadness
  • Extra nail biting, leg shaking
  • Feeling lost, having difficulties concentrating

The trio advised students about how to take care of themselves during these first few weeks while they are adjusting . . .
  • Eat well, get sleep, drink water
  • Exercise
  • Create a routine
  • Make their room feel personal
  • Use their favorite stress reliever for downtime
  • Talk to mom and dad
  • Ask for help from students and/or adults
  • Come to the nurses or counselors if they need to talk to someone.

The discussion was an opportunity for the kids to continue to get to know each other, to hear that they are all in the same boat, and to learn the resources that are here for them, should they need them. Checking out the articles below, you can see that the students’ answers could have come from the professionals themselves!

Please know that the Health and Wellness Center faculty are here for parents as well as students. Feel free to contact them if you have any questions or concerns.
