Science Meets Series Debuts with Two Programs in October
Earlier this year CSU Extension asked for input on what intersectional fields of science you’re most intrigued by for a new series called “Science Meets.” In partnership with Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities, Extension has two great events in store based on the community feedback front runners.
First up, space science! Come celebrate International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Brunner Farmhouse with a fun night of astronomy and space science activities for all ages. The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with a live performance by a space drummer, followed by a panelist of astronomers answering all your space science questions. Plus, view the moon through telescopes, make your own moon rocks and observe plein air artists paint the moonrise!
Next, explore art in science with bio artists Tarah Rhoda and Darya Warner at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 in the Broomfield Auditorium. Both artists will discuss their work and share the biological materials and processes that inspire their art. Get a firsthand look into the world of bio art by making your own mushroom culture and checking out the “biomaterials petting zoo” between
artist talks.
Thanks to a Broomfield Arts, Culture and Science grant, both events will be free. No registration required. See details below in upcoming events.

What do Japanese Beetles like to munch on in this region? CSU Extension is enlisting the help of local, knowledgeable gardeners to find out.
If you’ve observed Japanese Beetles in Broomfield, use this quick-and-painless online form to report the botanic names of plants they love AND, more importantly, plants they seem to ignore.
The information will be used to compile a region-specific list of susceptible and resistant plants.

Broomfield 4-H, it's not just farm animals! Projects range from archery and rocketry to showing fancy poultry, gardening, and scrapbooking. General club meetings are held once a month in the fall, and twice a month March-July. The Broomfield club is open to anyone ages 8-18 for 4-H and ages 5-8 for Cloverbuds.
The first meeting will be informational and a get-to-know-you on Monday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. The club will meet at the playground just north of the Broomfield Skate Park (behind Home Depot off 120th). Please email any questions to Broomfield4H@gmail.com.

Thanks for Sharing, Kerry!
Earlier this year, CSU Extension offered take and make seed starting kits at the library, and here's proof the kits worked. Broomfield resident Kerry Pettis documented her success with a series of photos including the take and make kit, seedlings, and full-fledged Anaheim peppers. (Also shown is Broomfield Master Gardener Andy Kramer assembling the kits.) Kerry reached out to the library to "say thanks for all the clever ways you interact with library patrons." CSU Extension is pleased to have a great partnership with the Broomfield Library, and a wonderful home there, as well.
