CSU Extension Celebrates 50 years of its Colorado Master Gardener Program as applications open Aug. 1

Calling all those who want to make a difference in their communities by volunteering! This year, the well-known Colorado Master Gardener Program turns 50 – marking five decades of equipping volunteer gardening experts to answer all manner of questions about growing trees, lawns, shrubs, flowers, fruits and vegetables in this semiarid state.

As a Colorado State University program fulfilling its land-grant mandate, CSU Extension cultivates local gardening experts with 60 hours of horticulture training, further preparing volunteers through apprenticeships, then assigning certified Master Gardeners to Extension offices in their home counties.

Then, volunteers field questions from other local gardeners and participate in a wide array of community gardening activities.

In 2024, these gardening educators – known as Colorado Master Gardeners (CMG) – had direct contact with 85,420 people through email and telephone calls, information booths, community gardens, garden tours and workshops held across the state, among other activities. And, in responding to questions, they relied on the largest Master Gardener resource library at any university in the Rocky Mountain region.

For many, it’s a meaningful way to give back to the community. As one Master Gardener stated: “I love plants and nature, and I love being of service to others. Being a CMG allows me to help the plants and people around me thrive, which gives me both a sense of purpose and joy.”

Interested in becoming a Colorado Master Gardener? The application will be available online only, starting on Aug. 1 at ColoradoMasterGardener.org. (The application link will be found in the image sliders on the homepage and by clicking the “Become a Master Gardener” tab in the top menu.) For a direct link to the application, which opens Aug. 1 and will remain open until Sept. 2, 2025, visit: https://col.st/vTpT1. Questions? Email csuextension@broomfield.org.

Back to School Vaccines

As the new school year approaches, it’s the perfect time to check your child’s vaccine records and add a vaccine appointment to your back-to-school checklist. Staying up to date with recommended immunizations not only keeps your child safe but also protects their classmates, teachers and school staff. Routine childhood vaccines help prevent the spread of serious diseases like measles, mumps and whooping cough. Don't wait until the last minute - appointments fill up quickly in August! Schedule an appointment with your child's pediatrician or at Broomfield Public Health’s Immunization Clinic if your family is eligible.

Summer Fire Safety

Wildfire is always a concern with the extreme weather in Colorado, and it is a more potent threat during droughts or dry spells which summer months often bring. Make sure you sign up for emergency notifications through LookoutAlert. Know about current fire restrictions and bans and be aware of red flag warnings. You can also  improve the chances of your home’s survival with defensible space and fire resistant landscaping. Help to protect people, plants and pets from wildfire with outdoor fire safety tips from FEMA. For more information and guidance for wildfire preparation and planning with a local perspective, visit the City and County of Broomfield’s Wildfire Preparedness web page.

Expanded Yard Waste Drop Off

Broomfield residents can properly dispose of yard waste for free as they clean up their yards during the summer months. The Tree Branch Recycling Facility is now accepting more types of yard waste, including grass clippings, weeds and perennial flower clippings. Get more details on what is accepted and not accepted, hours and location at Broomfield.org/TreeBranch.

Slow the Flow Sprinkler Evaluations

Did you know a typical Broomfield home uses 70,000 gallons of water each summer just for irrigation? That’s a significant chunk of your water bill! Make every drop count by signing up for a FREE outdoor sprinkler system evaluation through Broomfield’s Slow the Flow program. Small adjustments can save water, reduce costs and help protect Colorado’s rivers. Learn more and request a free sprinkler evaluation at broomfield.org/1103/Slow-the-Flow-Sprinkler-Evaluations.
