Even in late August, you will find vibrant colors in Broomfield's Xeriscape Demonstration Garden like this Vermilion Bluffs® Mexican sage near the DesCombes Drive entrance. Learn firsthand about late-season performers at the final guided tour of the season at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 (see details below). Thanks to everyone who voted in our orange and blue reader poll last month! The bearded orange iris won by the slimmest of margins over the Orange Carpet® hummingbird trumpet and Mongolian Bells® clematis. | |
Xeriscape, Anyone?
As the dog days of summer close in, CSU Extension in Broomfield is fielding a lot of questions about converting conventional lawns to more waterwise options. Where and how do you get started? Lucky for you, there are a number of trusted resources at your fingertips.
Colorado State University’s Lawn Conversion Resources page covers all things waterwise in one spot: lawn removal, xeriscape basics, landscape design, plant selection, alternative lower-water grasses, efficient irrigation, and more.
City and County of Broomfield Water Conservation Programs. Did you know Broomfield residents can apply to receive up to $750 off lawn removal services and/or complimentary Garden In A Box kits? You decide how to spend your benefit! Discounts are available on a first come, first served basis, dependent on available funds. Learn more about program requirements and how to apply online. Broomfield residents also are eligible for free sprinkler evaluations.
Ready to start designing your new xeric landscape? Plant Select®, a nonprofit collaboration of Colorado State University, Denver Botanic Gardens and professional horticulturists, introduces a new collection of beautiful, waterwise plants each year. You can find a huge online database of current and previous collections, complete with photos, descriptions, flowering season, sun/water needs, and much more. Thinking about a specific type of garden like a pollinator habitat or xeric border? Check out Plant Select®’s idea page, free waterwise landscape designs, and design photo gallery. All Plant Select® plants are trialed and tested for 2-5 years at Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado State University, and public and private gardens. The website includes a list of retailers carrying Plant Select® plants.
Resource Central is a Boulder-based nonprofit “determined to make conservation so simple that you don’t even realize you’re doing it.” In addition to conservation programs and webinars, Resource Central offers the previously-mentioned Garden In A Box, which includes pollinator-friendly starter plants, a care guide, and plant-by-number maps. The fall sale is ending soon - supplies are limited, but discounted.
Now that you have all the tools and resources, how about a little inspiration? The Broomfield Xeriscape Demonstration Garden’s last guided tour of the season is on Saturday, Sept. 7. Learn more on compass.broomfield.org. If you can’t make the tour, you can visit the garden 24/7 any day of the year. Or check out some of the featured plants on the Broomfield CSU Extension website.
