Horticulture Help for Broomfield Residents


Have a gardening question? Broomfield Master Gardeners are here to help! In the last few months, Broomfield Master Gardeners have answered 112 gardening questions from the public, free of charge. While tree and lawn care questions come up most frequently, Master Gardeners have the knowledge and training to address a multitude of horticulture topics. Looking for low-water or native plant recommendations for your yard? Need help identifying a tenacious weed? Want help troubleshooting your veggie garden problems?

Q. I want to learn more about the quality of my soil. How can I conduct a soil test?


A. To submit a soil sample to the CSU Spur Soil Testing Lab, all you’ll need is a stainless steel tool, a clean bucket, and a plastic or paper bag. Follow CSU Spur’s Soil Sampling Instructions closely. Once you’ve finished sampling, place the sample in a shipping box or envelope along with the Sample Submittal Form. Make sure the form is completely filled out before submitting.


Need a recommendation on which test to order? For most general soil testing needs, we recommend test S1: Complete ($40) or S2: Basic ($30). However, there are many other options to choose from based on your unique needs and goals for your garden!

The Broomfield Library, Arts, History and CSU Extension department will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 for the Juneteenth Holiday and on Thursday, July 4 for Independence Day.

Welcome, Master Gardener Apprentices!

CSU Extension welcomes SEVEN new Broomfield residents to its team of volunteers. They completed the intensive Colorado Master Gardener training program this spring, including the final exam. Next, each apprentice will complete 50-60 hours of volunteer service (a.k.a. on-the-job training) in the Broomfield gardening community.


Congratulations to Ellie, Penni, Richard, Stephanie, Yvette, Irina and Jasmine! A big thank you to our Broomfield Master Gardener mentors Diann, Mike, Kara and Bob for supporting apprentices as they begin their volunteer service.
