Learning Outside the Box
School is back in session, and we’ve been reminded over the last few years that there are many ways to learn. Check out these ways you can get outside the classroom to explore at your own pace and learn by doing!
Teaching Vegetable Garden at Brunner Farmhouse
Made possible by a sponsorship from Olson Outdoors and partnership with Brunner Farmhouse, the garden was created and planted with a focus on access and exploration for all abilities and backgrounds. There are seven raised beds, showcasing vegetable varieties and growing techniques, including a sensory garden and, of course, Broomfield’s namesake, Broomcorn.
A shining example of the “learn by doing” mindset, the shed outside the garden was built by students from Broomfield High School’s “Geometry in Construction'' class to meticulously match the appearance of the historic farmhouse. Check out this student-made video of the project!
Don’t miss the last two hands-on workshops of the season, “Seed Saving,” offered in September and October. Register today on Compass.
Xeriscape Demonstration Garden
Nestled at the corner of Descombes Drive and Spader Way, the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden showcases water-wise plants and techniques to inspire a more successful, sustainable Colorado landscape. The garden is open for the public to visit any time. Scan the QR code at each of the themed gardens to bring up a comprehensive list of plants, or visit the Broomfield CSU Extension website for in-depth information on a growing collection of featured plants.
Community Park Tree Collection
The Colorado Tree Coalition (CTC) catalogs diverse and notable trees for scientific study, education and conservation. This information is shared with the public through interactive online “Tree Collections,” which are a great year-round tool for students, educators and families. Did you know there is a CTC Tree Collection in Community Park outside the Broomfield Library? Exploring the Community Park Tree Collection online will help you design a self-guided tour with fun facts about nearly 70 trees!
