Note that the changes detailed here (+) are the change from Sunday, September 20 to Sunday, September 27. Data is released by the state at 4 p.m. each day and reported on Broomfield’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard by 6 p.m. Hospitalizations to date may reflect information that was recently reported to Broomfield Public Health but may have happened in previous weeks.
  • Free COVID-19 testing will take place on Tuesdays through the end of the year (new extension!) from 2-6 p.m. in the parking lot of the Health and Human Services building at 100 Spader Way. 2019-2020 Flu table
Frequently Asked Question:
Is COVID-19 really worse than the flu? Should I still get a flu shot this year?
  • While people often compare COVID-19 to the flu, there are some differences that warrant greater caution when it comes to COVID-19. This includes a longer incubation period (up to 14 days) for COVID-19, lack of vaccine, and that it is a novel virus and the long-term consequences are still unknown. Influenza is a virus that has been more thoroughly studied as it has been around much longer.
  • The 2019-2020 flu season is defined as late September 2019 to late May 2020 (~8 months). During that period, there were over 3,500 hospitalizations due to flu, 3 pediatric deaths and 64 outbreaks in long-term care facilities. In comparison, COVID-19 has led to a far greater number of hospitalizations and outbreaks and currently has a higher death rate.Surveillance data for the 2019-2020 influenza is reported on the state website
  • This could be a particularly bad year to get the flu as hospitals could be strained by COVID-19 patients. Getting the flu and COVID-19 together could expose you to extra health problems, especially if you are in a vulnerable population. The flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu. Most people who get the flu vaccine have no side effects and you can help prevent the spread to others close to you. Flu vaccine providers can be found at FluVaxColorado.org, including, for those who are uninsured.
  • New this year, pharmacies can choose to administer flu and other vaccines to children over the age of 3. This will provide an additional resource for the public to safely and easily receive the flu vaccine.
