History of Taxes

on Saturday January 31, 2026

We hope you learned about the history of the Boston Tea Party, the Whiskey Rebellion and the evolution of taxation in America. Can you imagine an America without crushing taxes?

Local News

Did you know about the City Council Focus Session on February 7, 2026?

Limited information was sent in the Community Update on February 2, 2026. There was no announcement on their Facebook page. We did manage to find the agenda for the focus session and the focus session presentation on the Broomfield City website.

As far as we could find, the focus session was not livestreamed or recorded for the public. So unless you were in attendance in person, you will never know what said; how is that for transparency. As they are making policy decisions that affect every citizen and taxpayer in Broomfield, the standard should be full transparency and over-communication. Unfortunately, once again the Council and Staff are falling short and are looking to "check a box" that they held the focus session.

New Discrimination Chapter in Broomfield Municipal Code

Proposed Ordinance No. 2296 would add a new chapter to the Broomfield Municipal Code, making it a violation of the Code to discriminate in Broomfield in three areas: housing, employment, and public accommodation.

Discrimination would be prohibited when it is based on: Race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic characteristics, marital status, religion, religious expression, national origin, ancestry, immigration status unless required by law, disability, source of income, or veteran status.

In housing, the ordinance would also prohibit discrimination based on custody of a minor child, parenthood and pregnancy. In employment, the ordinance would also prohibit discrimination based on age (40+).

Remember to attend the Ward 1 forum...

With the recent vacancy appointments to the Colorado State Legislature for William Lindstedt to State Senate District 23 and Kenny Nguyen to House District 33, there is now a vacancy on the Broomfield City Council Ward 1.

The council set February 18, 2026 (6-8 p.m., virtual) for the Ward 1 vacancy candidate forum. Applications open January 16 and close February 4; appointment expected February 24. Click here for for more details and application information.

Did your property taxes increase?

Like Levia Hartman in Fountain, taxpayers are facing unexpected and significant property tax hikes—such as her nearly 35% increase from about $1,244 to $1,882 annually.

The 2024 legislators put in an expiration provision in Senate Bill 24-233 for the temporary $55,000 adjustment (or exemption) from the actual value of residential properties. Is this their plan for affordability?

The council will be discussing property taxes at the Study Session on February 17, 2026. Plan on being there. The government giveth and the government taketh away...

Why does Broomfield Taxpayer Matters advocate for less government?

Too much government is like having a dozen different bosses all yelling contradictory orders at you at the same time.

One demands you paint the wall blue for "safety," another insists it has to be green for "environmental reasons," a third says red because of some obscure regulation from 1992, and a fourth threatens fines if you don't get approval first—meanwhile, you're just trying to get the dang wall painted so you can move on with your life.

It strips away your freedom to make your own decisions, creates endless confusion and red tape, slows everything down, jacks up costs, and kills off innovation because you're too busy complying with conflicting rules instead of actually solving problems. In the end, excessive government turns capable adults into frustrated bureaucrats' playthings, micromanaged instead of trusted to handle their own affairs.
