"Have you ever done anything to annoy someone? That is a redundant question which deserves no answer. We just had a “sleepover” with our thirteen and twelve-year-old granddaughters. They giggled the whole weekend and then the topic of brothers came up. I thought, “This ought to be interesting.” They began to share war stories about how their brothers are soooooo annoying." Read More

Our Update

"It bugs me that in the midst of our modern culture, striving for personal independence is now a norm. It seems like most people take pleasure when they can say, “Look what I did by myself.” At a young age, we teach our kids to be independent and work towards being productive individuals in our society. Can we really live an independent life? I have thought about this many times as Karen and I have battled her ovarian cancer for almost two years. What we have learned is that God uses other believers in the body of Christ to minister the Spirit’s exhortation and encouragement. We have received so many calls, emails, text messages and cards from God’s people in order to encourage us. In essence, they are an extension of the Holy Spirit’s ministry to us as we face the greatest challenge in 43 years of marriage." Last January I had hip replacement surgery. Things were going well when I started having nagging, then sharp pain, on the outside of my hip. Being “male”, I postponed the follow-up doctor appointment, fearing there was something wrong with the surgery. Finally, giving in, I trekked to the doctor and she told me I had bursitis. At the therapist, I was given some simple stretch exercises that I had once done for my days of jogging. A couple weeks in now, I find I am feeling much better—just by stretching. Podunk Ponderings: All Guts, No Glory

“What was it like? What did you see? I bet that was amazing!" These statements, and others like them, are the statements that would follow many of the short-term mission trips I took part in through my late teens and early twenties. The Lord gave me a heart for missions in my late teens, and while I was going through Bible college earning a mission’s degree, I took every opportunity I was given to go on a mission trip. Holiday breaks and summers took me to Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, Australia, Central America, and various parts of the US.

The impact those trips had on my life was great, but one of the greatest impacts was something I did not expect. Read More

Buzz, Excitement, ROAR! – VBS at Calvary

Praise the Lord for His faithfulness! Each year, you will hear the buzz at Calvary about Vacation Bible School. Calvary's KidzLink Director, Christina Seid, and I are a dangerous combination as we both burst with excitement at the thought of VBS! This year, we offered ROAR! VBS by Group and transformed our KidzLink area, Youth Ministry Room, and Sanctuary into an African themed safari where kids learned that God is Good in all circumstances. Read More

Missed Opportunity?
No. 2
Have you ever wanted something so bad that you would daydream about what life would be like if you had it? Perhaps it wasn’t a physical item, but rather a type of achievement. Whatever the case may be, what kept you from it? Sometimes the Lord knows better than us and wisely guards us from our very desires. Other times it is simply a missed opportunity or as Langston Hughes described it, “A dream deferred.”

Celebrating 75 years of Ministry
August 17-18

First Baptist Church of Lansing surpasses the 75-year milestone this year! For threequarters of a century, FBC has been leading the lost to Christ, baptizing them into a new life, building them up in God’s family, and equipping them to go in the power of the Holy Spirit for Him to do in others what has been done in them.

" Wilderness Wandering: Divine Appointment on Pacific Crest Trail "

"It was great being on the Pacific Crest Trail this year. Due to minor injuries (Knee, Back Spasms) I made a safety decision to only complete 109 miles. Over the last couple of months, I have come to understand that the actual issue wasn’t that I had to carry over 20 pounds of water in many areas, but that I am on a medication which causes dehydration. I was drinking more than twice as much water as others and it wasn’t enough. This was the real main cause. Being dehydrated in the desert isn’t a good thing. I want to share one of many conversations I had while being “on-trail.” Read More

Why You Might Not Want to Replace Your Departing Church Staff Member
"Too many churches hire staff by routine and tradition. The process is predictable. We have a vacancy. Start the search process. Make tweaks to the job description. Find someone to do the same job as the previous person. Hire them. Done."

"There could be a better way. Look at some of these considerations before your church gets in the rut and the routine of “we’ve always done it that way.” Here are seven key questions you might ask."
