Celebrating Veterans
Honor Flight South Florida, in partnership with Broward County Aviation Department and Spirit Airlines, recently hosted a veterans trip to Washington, D.C. The one-day Honor Flight to the nation's capital allowed 67 veterans to visit military landmarks. Upon their return, family, friends and well-wishers gathered at the terminal for a heartwarming surprise celebration to show support and gratitude.
This Veterans Day on November 11, the County thanks all veterans for their invaluable service to our country, including numerous County employees who have served and are currently serving as reservists. Broward County’s Veterans Services provides free assistance with all veteran related benefits to local veterans and their families. As part of a national campaign to support flag etiquette, Broward County participates in a flag disposal program providing designated boxes to properly dispose of American flags.
Protect our Gentle Giants
Hundreds of manatees will begin to make their way down to Broward County’s warm water refuges as the weather gets colder up north. November 15 marks the beginning of the state-wide manatee season which runs through March. Seasonal speed limit zones and manatee protection zones are implemented throughout the state as air and water temperatures drop. As part of the County's Manatee Conservation Program, the Natural Resources Division reminds boaters to look out for manatees on County waterways (including the Intracoastal Waterway and side canals).
As cruise season begins, Port Everglades recently welcomed the arrival of Princess Cruises’ newest ship, Sun Princess, to her winter homeport. Port Everglades is one of the three busiest cruise ports in the world and is expected to see a record 4.4 million cruise guests sail aboard 45 different ships from 10 different cruise lines. NatureScape Broward is now accepting NatureScape Emerald Award applications through January 3 for homeowners, businesses, municipalities, schools and government facilities which have created and maintained model Florida-friendly landscapes or completed exceptional projects that demonstrate visible ecological practices.
Broward County Transit (BCT) recently launched a new I-75 Express Coach route taking riders to and from the Miramar Park & Ride station and Miami’s Intermodal Center. Route 115’s premium service will provide a faster and more comfortable commute between Broward County and Miami-Dade County.
Highway Bridge and Maintenance Division received the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2024 Broward Small Project of the Year award for the Sheridan Bridge Emergency Repairs project. Environmental Permitting Division's Yvel Rocher was also awarded the ASCE's Broward Branch’s 2024 Government Engineer of the Year for his commitment to sustainability and innovation in engineering.
Florida Public Transit Association awarded Cesar Perez, a Broward County Transit Mechanic, with the Bus Technician of the Year, First Runner-Up for his exceptional skills, dedication and unwavering commitment to excellence.
