Sign up for Broward Bookworms!
Family Reading Fun! The Bookworm program provides Broward County families with young children (up to 5 years of age) with free books.
Families can sign up to receive new books in English or Spanish along with a guide for activities, information, and suggestions on how to share books with children.
All books are selected to engage our youngest readers. Whether you read every word, just look at the illustrations, or describe what is on the page, the time spent together will create lifelong memories.

Locked Out of Literacy: Causes, Consequences, and Costs

CGLR Learning Tuesdays affirm the Campaign's commitment to getting better at getting better by learning with and from each other. We are using these webinars as a portal through which to access and explore the best science, ideas, and programs. We expect to be informed, inspired, and energized by an eclectic mix of presenters who will bring knowledge derived from research, practice, and lived experience.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 2nd at 9:30 AM.
The meeting is hosted by The Children's Services Council of Broward County located at:
6600 W Commercial Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33319. The meeting format is “to be confirmed".
Broward Reads Coalition focuses on helping communities and policymakers promote school readiness and quality teaching, tackle chronic absence, and improve summer learning, as well as, engage parents as their children’s first teachers. The coalition seeks to unify stakeholders, align initiatives, and identify gaps.

Broward County Library is seeking an adult volunteer to be the secretary for Friends of Broward County Library. The group meets once a month on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 9 AM-11:30 AM and the secretary would be needed for those meetings which take place virtually.

Promote Summer Reading As a Summer BreakSpot Ambassador! |
The Literacy League is looking for Volunteers to help promote summer reading at Four Summer BreakSpots events located at Palms of Deerfiel, Stanley Terrace, C.W. Thomas Park and P.J. Meli Park. The Summer BreakSpot Ambassadors will provide enrichment activities including read a book aloud to the children, promote the community library and literacy resources already at the site, and encourage children to participate in the Broward Libraries "All Together Now: Todos Juntos Ahora.”” summer reading program.

Volunteer Guest Readers Are Needed at
C.W. Thomas Park!

Volunteer your time by bringing the love of reading to the After School Program participants at C.W. Thomas Park. They need volunteers that are passionate to be part of our After School Literacy Program which is located in Dania Beach. By assisting with this literacy reading initiative, you will be making a difference, one student at a time.
1-2 volunteers are needed to read to the children ages 5-12 at their 1-Hour After School Literacy Program, provide literacy activities, and to assist their facilitators (educators) where it is needed. All it takes is one hour a week and you can make a difference in these children’s lives that will last a lifetime.

Creative Children's Author/Illustrator Volunteers Needed! | |
The Literacy League’s Self-Publishing Book volunteer opportunity is a literacy initiative were you can create your own book. HandsOn Broward plans for these self-published books are to help bring the author and illustrator together and facilitate the publishing process. Our recommendation is making the submitted book no more than 20 pages long to be able to be utilized for these types of literacy events. HandsOn Broward is currently seeking an illustrator for books that were submitted by our volunteers.

Literacy Tutors Needed at Foundation Montessori! | |
2 Volunteers are needed - 2 Shifts: Hours of Operations Monday-Friday 7am - 6pm (Morning Shift & Afternoon Shift). Volunteers may be asked to do tutoring, for after-schoolers, read to the children in the morning, do arts and crafts in the afternoons, do outdoor educational activities, make copies, music time, assist with homework, literacy activities, and to assist our facilitators (educators) where it is needed. Volunteers should be prepared to be moving at all times. We recommend wearing sneakers or comfortable close-toed shoes. Due to requirements of The Florida Department of Children and Families volunteers are required to sign a document called the Volunteer Acknowledgment. When you express interest in this volunteer opportunity, someone will get back to you on that next step. | |

Volunteer with Guardian Ad Litem | | |
Change A Child's Story. The Guardian ad Litem Program in Broward and Palm Beach needs your help in making a difference for children alleged to have been abused, abandoned or neglected in both counties. The program's vision for all our children is to provide proactive, child-centered, trauma-informed advocacy for their best interests, including their legal interests, using a partnership of community advocates and professional staff.

Volunteers needed this Summer at Greater Horizons Academy! | | |
Volunteer your time at this amazing afterschool recreation program to assist teachers with the school-aged children who attend. You will assist with setting up and serving snacks, providing homework help, playing games, reading books, etc. It all depends on what activities the kids are doing that day. They really have a need for volunteers who can help with homework and tutoring students, so if you have that ability, please let the school know. | |

Take part in our DIY Superhero Cape & Book Bundle Volunteer Opportunity this Year!

HandsOn Broward’s Literacy League is passionate about helping students develop a love and excitement for reading which will in turn help set them up for educational success throughout their schooling.
During the 2023-2024 school year, Broward County Public Schools will be launching the “Broward Super Reader” initiative to support students in achieving and surpassing their grade reading level. Superhero capes made by volunteers will be given to students during these guest reading opportunities to assist students in building their own home libraries and continue reading at home.
Our hope is to inspire children to use their imaginations and encourage their love for literacy through creative play!

Do you have any special skills or know a trade? While many of us are not working in the same capacity we did pre-quarantine, some of us may have more time on our hands and be able to get HandsOn! Many of our partners are Early Childcare Centers and they are small businesses who are experiencing a lot of difficulty during these times. Many of them need help with things like painting, or light carpentry. These are things that you or someone you know may be confident doing!
Reach out to jenny@handsonbroward.org to express your interest in doing skilled volunteerism and remember to mention your skill so we can pair you with the right child care center!

In the month of July, we recognize and celebrate and value National Park and Recreation Month. We recognize the important role park and recreation professionals play in bringing people together, providing essential services and fostering the growth of our communities.
The Literacy League Program has selected four picture books that help children who are the next generation learn about and value our public lands.

Stirling Road Library Tale Trail (Outdoors) | | |

The Stirling Road Library Tale Trail is a children’s picture book that is presented in an outdoor setting as a series of signs, each with a page from the book, spread along a path.
The Stirling Road Library Tale Trail is a fun, literacy-based installation set up on our beautiful library grounds. As you stroll the Stirling Road Library Tale Trail, you’ll stop at displays holding pages of a book, following a story from beginning to end. This is a great way for children and adults to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.
Until Thursday, August 20, stop by to check out Be Who You Are by Todd Parr.
The Stirling Road Library Tale Trail is located outdoors on the south side of the library towards the Stirling Road entrance. No appointment is necessary. Enjoy the Stirling Road Library Tale Trail on our beautiful outdoor library grounds at your leisure. Once you have visited the Tale Trail, please come to the front desk to receive your completion prize!
