New! Legacy of Lillian Williams Brown Drives $5 Million Workforce Housing Project in East Tampa
CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks
A family-owned legacy project in East Tampa is moving forward after receiving a $5 million investment from the Community Redevelopment Agency, helping transform a long-held property into new housing for seniors and the local workforce.
The Legacy 34th Street mixed-use development will bring a four-story, 31-unit apartment building to a vacant lot — a level of density still relatively new for the historically Black community.
The project is rooted in the legacy of the late Lillian Williams Brown, a Tampa educator whose early investments in small properties laid the groundwork for what her family is now building.
“She would say that I’m not trying to get rich. I’m just trying to help someone,” said her daughter, Betoria Williams Watson.

New! Lakeland’s Next Big Thing? LEDC Leaders Share Their Predictions
CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks
They may not have a crystal ball, but part of the gig at the Lakeland Economic Development Council (LEDC) is to see what’s coming in the city’s future.
Downtown Lakeland is at the center of a few major changes. Developers are working to transform the East Main District, just past the overpass by The Joinery, into a Local Makers (LoMa) Village. The first piece of the project is Baseline, a pickleball/dining concept coming to a former warehouse on Rose Street next year, followed by maker spaces + showrooms.
North of downtown, the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency plans to redevelop nine blocks in Midtown. Plans for the Mass Market area include restaurants, retail, residential, and office space in mixed-use buildings.

New! Overtown is Home to Largest Mixed-Use Transit-Oriented, Affordable Housing Development
CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks
Miami’s oldest and historic Black neighborhood is now home to one of the largest mixed-income transit-oriented developments in Miami-Dade County.
County and city of Miami officials as well as project partners ushered in the new Atlantic Square, a 36-story tower which yields 616 apartment units including 320 for workforce units and 40 for affordable housing, during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The 25,000 square feet ground-floor retail and restaurant space project is located at 777 N.W. 2nd Avenue in Overtown, and within walking distance of Miami-Dade transit services including Metrorail, Metro Mover and the Overtown Transit Village bus terminal.
The project also towers over the Historic Overtown Folklife Village, 819 N.W. 2nd Avenue, which is anchored by the Black Archives Lyric Theater.
The development was built and financed through a public-private partnership involving Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, the city of Miami, and the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency.

From Dream to Doorstep: Tampa Resident Achieves Homeownership Through City Program
CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks
The City of Tampa is highlighting the life-changing impact of its DARE to Own the Dream Homeownership Program through the story of Tampa native Adrianne Harden, a fifth-generation resident who recently achieved her dream of homeownership at just 25 years old.
Harden closed on her first home in February, after receiving $100,000 in homeownership assistance through the City of Tampa’s DARE Program and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) funding. Her journey reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to helping residents build wealth, stability, and a future through homeownership.
A Tampa native, Harden grew up understanding the importance of homeownership from her parents, who encouraged her to pursue owning a home rather than renting. After graduating from college in 2022, she moved back in with her family and worked full-time while saving toward her goal.
“Adrianne’s story is exactly why we continue investing in programs that make homeownership more attainable for Tampa residents,” said CRA Board Chairwoman Naya Young. “Homeownership creates stability for families, strengthens neighborhoods, and helps residents build generational wealth. We’re proud to support hardworking individuals like Adrianne as they achieve this important milestone and put down roots in the city they love.”
