"Don't Fear The Future"
|
Each October, Harris Academy plans a "Don't Fear the Future" week for its students. The purpose of this week is to expose students to post-high school opportunities other than traditional four year colleges. This year, students are visiting Indiana Construction Association to learn about apprenticeships, Lincoln Tech, Mid-West Tec, and Med-Tech to find out about technical training, and O'Reilly Auto Parts distribution center to see what warehouse operations are all about. Additionally, speakers have come to Harris to present nursing, fire fighting and military options. Overall, exposure to a variety of occupations is helping Harris students learn to "Don't Fear the Future".

There are many items at Brownsburg High School that we are extremely proud of when it comes to our student achievement. One area that continues to rise for us is our Advanced Placement (AP) scores. The AP program in both US and Canada created by the College Board, which offers college-level curricula and exams to high school students. BHS offers 23 of these courses to our students in almost every academic area. These courses push students to the max cognitively and requires hours of work outside of the school day. Over the past three years, BHS has not only seen an increase in the number of students taking the AP exams, but an increase in the overall scores and student recognition.
The College Board recognizes specific students who are able to score at least a 3, 4, or 5 (5 is top score) on at least 3 different exams as AP Scholars. In 2011, BHS had 58 students recognized as AP Scholars. Last year BHS increased that number to 135, and this year BHS had 144 students recognized with this honor! Out of those 144 students, 57 are current juniors or seniors in the building and below is a picture. Congrats to the students and staff who put in countless hours to make this happen.
BHS is also extremely proud to announce that this year we are able to recognize 5 students as a National Merit Semi-finalists for the National Merit Scholarship. What an incredible accomplishment for these students! This program is a United States academic scholarship program for recognition and university scholarships for outstanding achievement on the PSAT test taken as a junior. The five seniors who accomplished this incredible feat are pictured below from left to right; Tyler Margetts, Sophia Topi, Ethan Hicks, Conor Nolan, and Charlie Gnagy. We wish them the best of luck as they compete for this prestigious scholarship among the nation's best students.
Along with those five students who are semi-finalists, we also had two students who were recognized as commended students. Below are seniors Trey Finn and Justin Hazel.

Our 2015 Fall Homecoming King and Queen: Matthew Thompson and Madison Brown
Students participated in Homecoming Spirit Days all week long. Students harkened back to the days of "Revenge of the Nerds" on Nerd Day!
What seems like the entire town showed up for the annual BHS Homecoming Parade. There were more than 30 different floats in this year's parade, and at the front of the line was Grand Marshal Mr. Don Stewart. Mr. Stewart has been a substitute teacher in the district since 2009, and is a retired member of the United States Air Force.
Mr. Daghe got into the action at the our Pep Session with a White Castle eating contest against a student from each of the four classes!
This year for Riley Week, CHAIN Link set a goal of raising $10,000 for Riley Hospital for Children. Through the generous support of Brownsburg students and their families, they were able to surpass this goal and raise a total of $17,155.34. The six elementary schools in Brownsburg raised $2,572.56 of that total and the two middle schools raised $5,951.23. In order to make the week a success, students placed red Riley collection buckets in businesses throughout the community, sold t-shirts, and held a penny war between the grade levels at the high school. All of the student efforts during Riley Week led up to the "Riley Red-Out" Brownsburg High School varsity football game on September 4th. Four local Riley Hospital families were treated to a special day at the tailgate prior to the Riley football game, and the kids had a blast despite the fact that the game ended up being rained out. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped to make this year's Riley Week a success.

Brownsburg High School was once again excited to welcome German exchange students from our partner school Wilhelmsgymnasium in Kassel, Germany. The twenty visiting German students and their two teachers, Jan Derstroff and Christiane Lecke, arrived in Brownsburg on September 27 and will stay with Brownsburg host families until October 12. The German students attend BHS with their host students. While here, the German students are working with their host students to learn more about environmental sustainability. The group has taken field trips to a variety of environmental organizations, like an urban farm and Trader's Point Creamery, and helped clear part of the B&O Trail. The German and American students also will teach a lesson to Brownsburg fourth and fifth graders to share what they have learned. Although it will be very hard to say goodbye on October 12, many of the BHS host students are looking forward to seeing their German students again when they visit Kassel in the summer of 2016 and attend Wilhelmsgymnasium.
Here is a statement from Victoria Van Kirk, a current BHS host student:
"Being able to host a German exchange student has been a very unique and incredible experience. Through my exchange student, Julia, I have learned many cultural differences between America and Germany. Julia was especially fascinated by how amiable and open our teachers are here at Brownsburg High School. I also learned quite a bit about the "Abitur," the test that the German students must take in order to graduate from a "Gymnasium." Along with the practical subjects, the students choose two other subjects to be tested on."

Brownsburg's fall musical, Peter Pan, quite literally has students soaring through the air. Come see the story of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, the Darling Children, and all the Lost Boys, Indians, and Pirates come to life on stage at BHS. Over 150 students have put in countless hours both onstage, behind the scenes, and in the orchestra resulting in a high quality production that will be fun for all.
Performances times:
October 8th - 7pm, October 9th - 7pm, & October 10th - 2pm & 8pm

Shannon Lee Alexander, the author of Love and Other Unknown Variables, spent the day at BHS Media Center on Tuesday, September 1st. Sophomore students were able to sign up in their English classes to attend one of her three presentations, including an after school event. She spoke about her book, the writing process, and character development. The Junior Lit Seminar students all read her book over the summer, then got to have lunch with her and hear her presentation about writing. Students also had the opportunity to speak with her one on one and have their books autographed.

If you happen to live close to Brownsburg High School or drive by anytime during the summer, then you know how hard and often the Marching Band at Brownsburg is working to improve their craft. Students put in many hours of marching and playing to get ready for the performance season which is currently in full swing. Thus far in the school year the band has competed at Decatur Central, Brownsburg, Fishers and Avon and will be competing at Plainfield this coming weekend with Regionals and Bands of America Regionals @ Lucas Oil Stadium over fall break. The Sound of Brownsburg placed 2nd at Decatur Central and 5th at Avon against some of the top bands in the state of Indiana. Directors Joe Vrabec and Tracy Runyon look to earn a spot back to Lucas Oil Stadium for the state competition this year as the students are working harder than ever and seeing this hard work pay off. Good luck to all students and Mr. Runyon and Mr. Vrabec as they continue on this path to meet this goal
Below, we have also included a picture of the senior members of this year's marching band. We would like to congratulate them on four great years in the program!

Mr. Stucker is at it again!
The annual blindfold experiment has been conducted at BHS for over 30 years in the Psychology classes. Students spend a class period in groups of two walking around the halls of the high school. A student "guide" walks around with the blindfolded individual to provide assistance and safety. Students switch roles after about 20 minutes. It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of all information that we take in on a daily basis comes in through our eyes. This experiment helps to demonstrate to students what life is like when a person loses one of their senses. They notice that their "other" senses tend to intensify when they lose their sight. Participants always report noticing various things around the building that they have never paid attention to previously. Students are also asked to smell various things...cooking spices, an onion, etc. while blind. Students are surprised when they are often unable to identify these basic smells. This experience always makes a distinct impression on the students and sparks much discussion concerning the importance of sight in our lives.
