"One Museum, One Book" Book Club: "We Were Strangers: The Story of Magda Preiss" with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center
Tuesday, June 15, 2021
7:00 PM
We Were Strangers is the true story of Magda Preiss, a breathtaking masterpiece of Holocaust literature, composed in her own words upon arriving in America in the 1940s. Lived and told by a beautiful young bride with fearless defiance, Magda’s harrowing experience reveals a character who is larger than life and death. It recounts the love of culture, beauty, and life itself that fueled Magda’s will to survive; the love for her husband that made her stay to face Nazi horror instead of escaping with her parents and siblings; and her love for strangers, whose humanity amidst the most inhumane circumstances illuminates every page through Magda’s heroic voice.
From an idyllic childhood in Czechoslovakia through the hells of Auschwitz, Birkenau, Bergen-Belsen, Ravensbrück, and Beendorf, Magda shows what it means to be a stranger at home and in foreign lands, to be estranged from loved ones and even from oneself as the world goes insane. In devastating sentences as sharp as barbed wire, Magda uncovers universal truths from her experience as a woman in the Holocaust.
The editor of We Were Strangers, AJ Greenberg, will moderate the discussion.
After registering, you will receive an email with information about how to access the program.

2021 Linda and Tony Rubin Lecture: The Allies’ Most Dangerous Spy Was a Woman: Virginia Hall
Wednesday, June 16, 2021
8:00 PM
As she fled certain death by scaling a remote Pyrenees mountain pass, the secret agent worried and planned: Would the network of spies and saboteurs she built in France survive Nazi occupation? Would those who had been arrested—including several Jews—survive the torture of Klaus Barbie, the infamous “butcher of Lyon”? With her cover blown by a double agent, would she be able to return and coordinate attacks on the Germans before an Allied invasion? The agent was American Virginia Hall, who changed espionage forever, escaped with her life, and did it all with just one leg.
The public is only beginning to know her full story. Those who know it best—members of Virginia Hall’s family and the deputy director of the CIA Museum—will join us for this live virtual program.

The United States played a vital role in saving Europe’s intellectual elite from the Nazis. American universities welcomed Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Rudolf Carnap, Richard Courant, and hundreds of other physicists, philosophers, mathematicians, chemists, historians, and linguists who transformed the American academy. Yet for every scholar who survived and thrived, many more did not. Those deemed too young, too old, too conservative, too liberal, or “too Jewish” were rejected and left to face the horrors of the Holocaust. Well Worth Saving—a finalist for the 2020 National Jewish Book Award—is a harrowing account of the profoundly consequential decisions American universities made about refugee scholars during the Nazi era.
