Every nuance of form and fantasy one can imagine is evoked in Talbot Mundy's incredible tale of intrigue, King of the Khyber Rifles. SAMURAI GHOST AND MONSTER WARS By Kuniyoshi. Samurai Ghost and Monster Wars the first book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is regarded as one of the true masters of ukiyo-e, the populist art of Edo-period Japan. Kuniyoshi produced thousands of prints and designs during his lifetime, but is perhaps best-known for his images of samurai warriors and yokai from history and myth, depictions which were revolutionary in their dynamics, color and visual violence. This book collects and presents more than 70 of Kuniyoshi’s most vivid and complex images of warriors, ghosts, demons and monstrous beasts, presented in large-format and full-color throughout. Shinbaku Books, 2015. Out of Print. Condition: Fine Plus. Lightly tipped corners. One tiny crease front cover bottom corner....More. Item Code: RB9013 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 128pg, Full Color $125.00 |

THE EYE OF ATROCITY By Yoshitoshi. The Eye of Atrocity is the second book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who had apprenticed to ukiyo-e master Kuniyoshi since his adolescence, and was twenty years old when he first began to make sketches of severed heads and dismembered corpses. Soon he would start to incorporate this imagery into his work, and his vivid and bloody battle scenes quickly caught the public eye. Most of Yoshitoshi's mushs-e ("warrior pictures") triptychs and series between 1861 and 1869 would include his trademark scenes of carnage, in particular Eimei Nijuhasshuku (1866-68), a collaboration with fellow artist Ochiai Yoshiiku. This series was an unashamed exercise in atrocity which took the concept of muzan-e ("cruelty prints") to new extremes of violence and gore. In 1868, Yoshitoshi was a first-hand witness to the Battle of Ueno, a cataclysmic clash which further inspired him to create new images of evisceration and decapitation. Shinbaku Books, 2012. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus. Lightly tipped corners....More. Item Code: RB9014 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 128pg, Full Color $200.00 |

DEMONS FROM THE HAUNTED WORLD By Yoshitoshi. Demons From the Haunted World is the third book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who was a student of ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and showed a predilection towards two types of subject in his early work: exceptionally bloody musha-e ("warrior prints"), and supernatural images of demons and ghosts. Yoshitoshi maintained an interest in depicting the haunted realm of Japanese myth right up until his last major series, 36 Ghosts, in 1889 (two years before his death). Like all Yoshitoshi's art, these prints are now considered to be the work of ukiyo-e's last master practitioner. Shinbaku Books, 2012. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus. Lightly tipped corners....More. Item Code: RB9015 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 128pg, Full Color $150.00 |

CRUELTY AND CARNAGE By various. Cruelty and Carnage is the sixth book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features Muzan-e ("cruel pictures") and Chimidoro-e ("bloody pictures") which together constitute a significant strand of ukiyo-e, the populist art of late Edo-period Japan. The most famous example of this genre remains Eimei Nijuhasshuku (1868) by the artists Yoshitoshi and Yoshiiku. Yoshiiku's violent contributions to this series are matched in horror by many other of his prints, ranging from news-sheet illustrations of misogynistic murder to kabuki scenes of torture and images of warriors harvesting severed heads in battle. Such gore-splashed pictures were also produced by numerous other artists, including Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi, Yoshiyuki, Kunichika, and the unsung creators of garish Osaka sex-crime news-sheets. Shinbaku Books, 2013. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus. Lightly tipped corners....More. Item Code: RB9016 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 128pg, Full Color $75.00 |

NIGHT PARADE OF HELL CREATURES By Kyosai. Night Parade of Hell Creatures is the seventh book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-89) who was only 6 years old when he joined the school of the great ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, along with such fellow pupils as Yoshitoshi, who followed him in 1850. Later Kyosai studied traditional Japanese painting at the Kano school. As befits this varied apprenticeship, Kyosai would embrace many styles and methods during his artistic career. His eclectic approach may also be partly attributable to a legendary sake-drinking habit, which could account for the more bizarre extremes of his chosen subject matter — in particular, weird demons and the bloody tortures of Hell. Kyosai can now be regarded as not only one of the last true ukiyo-e masters, but also as one of the first truly modernist painters of Japan. Shinbaku Books, 2013. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus. Lightly tipped corners. Very light edge wear....More. Item Code: RB9017 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 128pg, Full Color $100.00 |

NIGHT PARADE OF DEAD SOULS By various. Night Parade of Dead Souls is the tenth book in the Ukyo-E Master Series and features the female ghost or yurei (literally, “faded spirit”) which is perhaps the most recognizable figure in Japanese horror culture, made known globally at the turn of the 20th century through the success of Japanese ghost films such as Ringu (“The Ring”) and Ju-On “The Grudge”). The yurei's traditional appearance - long black hair in disarray over the face, white skin and white burial clothing - goes back to the very first painted scroll images of such creatures, of which the prototype is said to be Maruyama Okyo’s painting of the ghost of the geisha Oyuki, dating from 1750. This book collects 70 of the most striking and disturbing Japanese ghost images of the Edo-Meiji period and offers an essential glimpse into the twilight strata of Japanese art, popular myth, and religious belief. The artists featured range from obscure painters to the venerated ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who created numerous ghost paintings around 1880. All the paintings, which range in date from 1750 to the early 20th century, are shown at full-page length, and in full color throughout. Shinbaku Books, 2013. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus. Lightly tipped corners....More. Item Code: RB9018 Soft Cover, 9 x 11, 96pg, Full Color $100.00 |
