Miss BMS Pageant raises over $4,000 to enhance learning experience

The Miss Buford Middle School pageant raised over $4,000 for the school’s eighth grade team.

BUFORD, Ga.,-The Buford Middle School eighth grade team members took over the Miss Buford Middle School Pageant in 2014.  And this year, the event raised $4,673; after overhead costs, the total investment the pageant will make for the eighth grade team is approximately $4,300.

According to pageant director and teacher, Mrs. Katie Duncan, “This amount is not too shabby for two hours on a Thursday night.”

With the continued concerns of COVID-19, tickets had to be pre-sold to ensure social distancing and safety.  Each contestant’s family purchased tickets in advance, which allowed families to be seated appropriately spaced.  Further, all audience members were required to wear masks.

Duncan continued, “It was much more labor intensive to plan the pageant this year due to the pre-sale tickets and reserved seating, but it was worth it just to be able to have the pageant.  After having to postpone it from the original date in November, we wanted to do what was necessary to ensure the girls got this experience and made memories.  As for the proceeds, the money goes directly to the eighth grade teachers to use as needed in our classrooms.”

School Principal, Laura Beth Short, is excited to see this group of young leaders engage in an event that helps their entire class. “The funds raised by the event go towards purchasing sets of novels, science supplies for experiments, or any additional classroom supplies needed. We are grateful for the continued support of the parents and faculty who are dedicated to celebrating our students and giving them positive ways to engage even with the pandemic.”

Duncan was also excited this year’s event attracted so many contestants. Duncan explained, “I am definitely hoping that we will be able to celebrate them this year since they've missed so much ‘normal’ in the last few semesters at school."
