Dear friends,
Our society/government/culture is obsessed with differentiating one from another, based on sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, religion, political party, etc. An individual can only fall into one category, not the other, and God forbid someone be in-between the two. This week, we read the beautiful testament to our one-ness in God in Galatians 3:23-29. We are reminded that it is a gift that God created us to NOT be contained by these man-made boundaries we seem so obsessed with, God made us to be so much more than that. God didn't create the beautiful chaotic cacophony of humanity for us to 'hunker down' with people just 'like us' and keep 'the other' at bay. That is us playing God and utterly and completely denying God's unique presence in our neighbor. It is in the moments when I'm in community with my sisters and brothers who think/act/speak/practice differently from myself, that I learn the most about God. So, dear friends, let us build more bridges, more ways to be in community with our sisters and brothers different from ourselves, and less walls, less physical and metaphorical bunkers to hide from and deny the infinite faces and expressions of God in our midst.
