Craft show success starts with the right product mix

Craft shows are one of the best ways to get your work in front of new customers — but showing up with the right mix of products can make all the difference between a slow day and a sell-out.

A well-balanced booth has something for everyone: small impulse buys to catch passersby, mid-range favourites that keep sales steady, and a few showstopping statement pieces that draw people in and build your reputation as a skilled woodturner.

Goal: Offer something for every type of customer — from casual browsers to serious buyers — while managing booth space, inventory, and production time.

It can be hard to know how to build that right mix of products if you're just starting into attending shows. So we've put together some ideas for you on how to plan your product lineup to maximize both sales and impact.

1. Entry-level impulse buys

Purpose: Draw people in, encourage quick sales, and cover booth fees fast.

Target price: $10–$30

Ideas:

  • Key rings, bottle stoppers
  • Small ornaments or holiday-themed pieces
  • Simple turned pens (e.g. Slimline, Credit Card or Fancy Slimline pen kits)
  • Small kitchen tools (coffee scoops, veggie peelers)

Tips:

  • Display near the aisle for “grab and go” appeal
  • Use signage like “Great stocking stuffers” or “Perfect teacher gifts” or "Ideal for co-workers"

2. Mid-range crowd pleasers

Purpose: Main sales drivers — the sweet spot for volume and profit.

Target price: $40–$100

Ideas:

  • Higher-end pens (rollerball, ballpoint)
  • Small bowls, vases, or lidded boxes
  • Pepper mills and salt shakers
  • Ice cream scoops, pizza cutters, measuring spoons

Tips:

  • Group by theme (kitchenware section, writing instruments section, etc.)
  • Offer gift packaging or bundle pricing to boost average sale

3. Premium showstoppers

Purpose: Create visual impact, attract attention, and signal craftsmanship.

Target price: $150–$500+

Ideas:

  • Large statement bowls or platters
  • Segmented or inlayed art pieces
  • Premium pen sets in display boxes
  • Limited-edition series (numbered/signed)

Tips:

  • Showcase prominently with lighting and risers
  • Even if they don’t sell, they make everything else seem more valuable
