U.S. Bank and Dome Construction
|
|
We want to thank U.S. Bank for their recent $50,000 grant award, which will have a significant impact on our projects and program offerings in 2024. As we gear up to build two new housing developments simultaneously and continue expanding our home repair program, the bank's incredible gift will support us as we navigate this challenging and exciting time.
Through their Community Possible platform, which includes philanthropy, community investments and team member volunteerism, U.S. Bank powers human potential and takes action to close wealth gaps. Homeownership is a catalyst to wealth building for American households and represents a significant proportion of net wealth for low-income households. Partners like U.S. Bank help us create more affordable homeownership opportunities for our low-income neighbors so they can enjoy the benefits of homeownership for generations.

We also want to give a shoutout to our friends at Dome Construction, who sponsored a Team Build last November. Not only did the Dome Construction team complete important repairs for a homeowner in need including landscaping and cleanup, electrical work and carpentry, they also provided funding to cover the cost of Gina and Marilou's roof replacement, which you can read about below! Partners like Dome Construction are making a real and lasting difference in families' lives through their hands-on involvement and generosity. Click here to view a recap of their Team Build!
These partnerships remind us that building a better future is a collective effort. Thanks to U.S. Bank and Dome Construction, whose commitment strengthens the foundation of our mission.

Marilou & Gina's story
"when you help somebody that's in need... you're living a beautiful life"
|
|
Gina (left) with her mom, Marilou (right) in front of their newly repaired roof on January 25.
|
|
Meet Marilou and Gina, who live in Simi Valley. Gina dedicates herself full-time to caring for her mother, Marilou, who lives with dementia. Amid recent financial hardships and personal losses, including the passing of Gina's brother, they received a daunting notice from their home insurance company, putting their housing at risk. Their home, weathered and worn, particularly the roof, became a symbol of their struggles.
Looking to shield their home from the recent rain storms, Gina improvised with blue tarp to combat leaks caused by the compromised roof. Fearing potential mold and structural damage, Gina researched solutions. That's when she discovered Habitat Ventura's home repair program. Selected to receive a new roof, Gina jokes with Marilou that the roof renovation is her Christmas gift to her mom.
In Gina's words, "I also look at it as if it were your own parent, for me it is my own parent. If you look at these (home repair stories) not like they are strangers but let's say it was someone you loved... if they were in that situation what would I want to do to help them."
The Habitat Ventura home repair crew not only provided a physical solution but also brought positivity into their lives. Gina expresses her gratitude, saying, "Habitat Ventura has been a JOY - everyone has been so professional and respectful and kind... honestly it's been a great experience."
The impact of Habitat Ventura's support goes beyond the repaired roof; it extends to the warmth, safety, and renewed hope that Marilou and Gina now experience in their home. As Gina beautifully puts it, "You're seeing the fruit of what you've been giving; we're actually the fruit of that - you didn't realize that you'd ultimately be helping your friend."
As we celebrate success stories like Marilou and Gina's, we invite you to be a part of the transformative impact of Habitat Ventura's Home Repair Program.
Whether you're in need of assistance or seeking to make a difference, consider applying for our home repair program or supporting us through donations.

Our CEO, Darcy Taylor, and Vice Chair, Michelle Yee, represented Habitat Ventura as we joined 32 fellow California Habitat for Humanity affiliates in a visit to Sacramento to meet with state lawmakers last week.
Habitat affiliates asked our state assemblymembers and senators to urge Governor Newsom to restore $152.5 million to the CalHome program, which is the primary source of state funding that enables non-profit housing developers like Habitat to build affordable homes for ownership. Without this funding, upwards of 2,000 affordable homes in the California low-income pipeline will be lost at a time when housing production is far below the annual need, millions of Californians are housing cost burdened, and homeownership rates are at their lowest since the 1940s.
We also voiced our support for AB 1868 (Friedman), aiming to amend the state revenue and tax code for assessing deed-restricted properties owned and occupied by low-income, first-time homebuyers. This bill would streamline processes for low-income housing developers like Habitat and eliminate HOA fees for homeowners of qualifying low-income housing units.
Assemblymember Chris Ward, who represents the 78th District and is the new Chair of the Housing and Community Development Committee, shared valuable insights. As there are many factors that affect housing in California, and land and resources will continue to be a significant barrier to housing development, he stressed collaboration and partnership between housing organizations and governments as the movement for the future. He also touched on important new legislation, such as SB 4 and SB 9, which will expand opportunities to secure land for affordable housing development.
Affiliates were also treated to a panel discussion by the City of Temecula and Habitat Inland Valley on the merits of collaboration with city officials in building and repairing homes. Their relationship exemplifies how cities and Habitats can accomplish a lot together working in unison.
The Habitat 2023 Legislator of the Year Award was given to Assemblymember and Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes of the 50th District for her advocacy for SB 4 and SB 9 and for being instrumental in restoring millions of dollars in funding for affordable housing into the state budget.
Habitat Ventura wants to personally thank our local representatives, Assemblymembers Jacqui Irwin, Jesse Gabriel and Steve Bennett, for taking the time to meet with us about ways to create affordable homeownership opportunities in the state.
