The Home Builders Association (HBA) of Aiken County and Aiken County Habitat for Humanity (ACHFH) Board Members, Partner Family and  Members ceremonially broke ground at the 10th Home Builders Blitz in Aiken on Wednesday, May 30. "This place represents a place my sons can call their own for years to come," said ACHFH Partner Family Member Carol Brockington. Ms. Brockington has worked almost 200 sweat equity hours toward her new home. Her home is extra special as it is the first Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliant house that the Home Builders' Association of Aiken County has built for ACHFH.
HBA of Aiken President Todd Gaul reflected on his first notice that Ms. Brockington and her family would be the recipients of this Builders Blitz. "I remember thinking in our church home group how wonderful it was that it was Carol and her boys." HBA of Aiken County leads the effort to bring community contractors and builders together to build a home for an ACHFH partner family. This year marks the 10th house constructed during the Home Builders Blitz in Aiken County.
"We look forward to this partnership every other year. It captures the core value of community that Habitat upholds," said Executive Director Yolanda Archuletta. "We are grateful that HBA of Aiken County makes this possible and works tirelessly to gather the partners needed to make the dream of homeownership possible for a family."

New home owner, Carol, worked at the house everyday.

After applying to be a HFH Partner family, Carol had to attend classes and fulfill requirements. She also had to undergo many hours of financial counseling.
In addition to the classes and counseling, she had to work  200 hours at her home and on other HFH homes. She has learned to lay floors, shingle roofs, and install doors and windows.
On June 8, Carol was able to thank the 50 sponsors and hundreds of volunteers for their hard work on her home. Amid tears of joy, she celebrated the men and women, businesses and contractors, who built her home with their time, talent and treasure.

Many thanks to...
Aiken Pest Control made sure that there was a huge cooler full of bottled water every morning for the workers!   In addition Aiken Pest Control (William Sojo & Craig Heath)  and Consolidated Planning, Inc. (Kurt Mueller & Tiffany Garland) provided  lunch every day for everyone.

Contractor Services of Aiken (Nick Witter) supplied labor and footing and  was the first person to volunteer after I issued the call! Miller's Clearing & Leveling (Gary Miller) does the backfill slab every year, and was quick to volunteer, as well. City Electric Supply Co (Sammie Thomas) was happy to donate the load center, and Hughes Supply (Jodi Thomason) donated the kitchen sink and faucet, as they do every year! And thanks SCE&G (Gary Hinton) for setting the meter!

It was a pleasure for me to work with everyone! The whole Blitz Experience was heartwarming, rewarding and educational. Robert Girardeau and Mitch Johnson kept things running smoothly! Mike Caldwell and Dusty Hall also helped supervise the entire project.
