“It means a great deal to me to witness the before and after. When I was here as a client, the kitchen was dark and gloomy. Now when I walk through the doors and look at the work that you have done, I feel it gives the clients the sense of peace that is needed to recover from addiction. Thank you again for spreading your love here at Gilgal.” - Rachel Dowdell, Gilgal Resident Manager

HomeAid Atlanta held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, October 1 to celebrate a completed renovation at Gilgal in Atlanta. Gilgal serves women overcoming addiction, helping them to rebuild their lives. The project, led by Vince Longo of Vincent Longo Custom Builders provided a complete kitchen renovation (top photo, left), rebuild of the front porch, new flooring, fresh paint and lighting in the dining room, and clean-up/landscaping around the property.
The Gilgal renovation kicked off on August 20 with a volunteer workday. Volunteers from HB NEXT and Quantum National Bank spent the day working hard alongside Vincent Longo Custom Builders on several big projects around the home to prepare for the renovation. Sean Carbonell, Construction Resources, and Founders Kitchen & Bath provided donations and deep discounts of materials and labor for the renovation, and Vincent Longo Custom Builders (team photo, left) generously covered costs after donations. Volunteers from Whitefield Academy wrapped up the project with a landscaping workday. The project, valued at approximately $50,000, is a 100% donation to Gilgal.

500 CareKits for Atlanta Community Food Bank
|
|
On October 27, volunteers from The Northview Church Middle School and Teen Ministry packed 500 HomeAid CareKits. These volunteers had a great time packing CareKits in their Halloween costumes! Thank you to The Northview Church for hosting us once again! This was the second time this fun group volunteered to pack CareKits.
HomeAid CareKits supply hygiene items and more. These little bags can make a big impact for someone struggling with homelessness, meeting immediate hunger and hygiene needs. CareKits include items like snacks and water, hand sanitizer, deodorant, a comb, a toothbrush and paste, bandages, tissues, and more. The 500 CareKits were donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

HomeAid held a Care Day on September 24 at Forsyth County Family Haven, a 21-bed living facility that offers a safe place for women and children who have suffered domestic violence.
Clients come to Family Haven fleeing an abusive home, often bringing only what they are able to load into their car. Like most nonprofits, Family Haven operates on a tight budget. Thanks to donations and the work of volunteers, the September 24 HomeAid Care Day provided a savings of nearly $8,000 for Family Haven. Because HomeAid Care Days are free-of-charge, instead of spending on facility issues, Family Haven can use their savings to care for the families and individuals they serve, like this survivor:
As a result of domestic violence, Survivor "A" came to Family Haven after sustaining broken bones and severe head injuries from her fiancé. She was in denial about the abuse she suffered and faced many barriers regarding employment, housing, mental health as well as legal issues. While residing at Family Haven, she engaged herself with supportive services including counseling, overcoming the denial of her abuse. She secured employment with Atlanta Public Schools and obtained permanent housing to begin her new life free of abuse, "I realize now that I don't have to live in fear anymore,” she said.

Project Update: North GA Angel House
|
|
HomeAid has eleven projects in various phases of development and construction around metro Atlanta, and our team is making incredible progress at North Georgia Angel House (NGAH)! Look at the progress, at right, showing the transformation from a metal storage facility (bottom photo) to five apartments for girls transitioning out of the foster care system. Builder Captains Austin Lineberry of New River Building Co. and Ronnie Cline of Taylor Morrison are doing an incredible job leading this renovation.
The tiny apartments will allow for much-needed support and supervision until the girls are prepared for independent living. NGAH provides shelter, food, tutoring, transportation, life skills, conflict management, family visits, and many other services to girls and young women in, and aging out of, foster care.

HomeAid Supporter Spotlight: Century Communities
|
Throughout 2021, home builder Century Communities has provided generous support through in-kind and financial contributions in support of our mission. In April and May of this year, Century Communities Atlanta employees provided major support for HomeAid Atlanta’s 20th Annual Essentials Drive. Through an office-wide campaign, nearly $7,000 was collected in support of our annual diapers and baby wipes drive for families in need.
On June 11, Century Communities donated cabinetry, furniture, appliances and more to HomeAid in support of our upcoming renovation project at Making A Way Housing.
On September 24, Century Communities joined a HomeAid Care Day at Forsyth County Family Haven where volunteers painted several rooms and completed landscaping tasks at the facility for women and children who have suffered domestic violence.
On October 12, Century Communities participated in HomeAid’s 19th Annual Hope & Homes Golf Tournament with a foursome and as a sponsor. Century Communities is also providing support for the Thanks for Giving Drive.
In addition to providing major support for housing and outreach initiatives, Greg Ott, Century Communities Metro Atlanta Division President, has served on the HomeAid Atlanta Board of Directors since February 2020. “Giving back to the place you call home by working together towards a shared goal is what community is all about,” he says. “Working together as a team and joining up with other volunteers helps us grow and demonstrates how much one person can positively impact another person's world. We are honored to have had the opportunity to give back to our community through HomeAid's outreach programs. We look forward to continuing our commitment and partnership with our HomeAid Atlanta family.” Learn more!
