ANNOUNCING HBA'S SKILLED TRADES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2021
HBA’s Foundation was created to give members the opportunity to give back to a charity that is uniquely aligned with our profession.
The Foundation’s success and ability to fulfill our mission are dependent on contributions from you. Gifts to the Foundation are fully tax deductible and are used to improve housing affordability for the families of our area. The Foundation also houses the recently established HBA Skilled Trades Scholarship Fund.
The HBA Skilled Trades Scholarship Fund has been formed to support young people who will become the next generation of construction workers in southeastern Michigan. The fund’s establishment was made possible, in part, by a generous endowment of $50,000 by Paul C. and Cheryl Robertson. In recognition of their role as a Founding Member of this scholarship fund, we have created the Paul C. and Cheryl Robertson Honorary Scholarship, in the amount of $5,000, to be awarded annually.
The Robertson Honorary scholarship is the largest scholarship to be awarded annually. An annual Compo Family Memorial Scholarship will also be awarded, in memory of HBA’s 2020 President David S. Compo, his wife Michele and their son Dawson.
In September 2021, scholarships were awarded to eight deserving individuals, aged 18 to 25 years, who are pursuing a construction career by either working for a residential builder or subcontractor, studying in post-secondary residential construction skilled trades training or enrolled in a two-year college degree program in the area of construction. They are:
- Paul & Cheryl Robertson Honorary Scholarship - $5,000 to RUSSELL DAMUTH
- David S. Compo Family Memorial Scholarship - $3,500 to CAMERON DUBIEL
- General Scholarship - $2,500 to CALEB TANNER
- General Scholarships - $1,000 to NATHAN HUIZINGA, JAKE FRISCH, WILLIAM KOBEL and STEVEN BRIESCH
- General Scholarship - $500 – MICHAEL BRADY, JR.
To learn more about the scholarship fund – as well as how to donate or let qualified individuals you may know how to apply for a scholarship – simply go to builders.org and click on the HBA Skilled Trades Scholarship Fund banner.
Gifts to HBA’s 501(c)(3) Foundation are fully tax deductible and are welcomed from industry professionals and others by mail to Association office or online at www.builders.org/events.php.

Please make plans to join many other HBA members and guests at the 2021 Awards Recognition & Holiday Celebration on Wednesday, December 8th in the Legacy Ballroom at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.
This year, we are fortunate that there are no restrictions in place to limit event size. We are planning an in person, celebratory event. At the same time, we have reduced table seating to 8 guests per table and will adopt additional safety measures as recommended.
HBA's annual celebration will honor President Ben Templeton, who has also been named the 2021 honoree for Distinguished Service to the HBA, and the other distinguished honorees.
The evening begins with an Hors D'oeuvres Reception followed by an elegant full dinner, holiday dessert and Awards Presentation. SEE THE FULL LIST OF HONOREES AND MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS HERE.
The last time we were able to hold this event in person, it was attended by over 400 members and guests. If you'd like to bring your company into the spotlight for the audience attending this year, PLEASE RESERVE YOUR SPONSORSHIP HERE.
