As we approach the general elections, Bay Staters are preparing to send a powerful signal nationwide: we can and will remain a strong democratic stronghold. Together, we will defend and defy when necessary — and we will “Block and Build” to advance a bold, caring, inclusive vision for our communities. As a Blue State, we share our progressive policy and leaders! And at a time like this, you can help drive our community-centered political power building by participating as a voter or donor in the municipal elections. Heck, you can hold signs and door-knock, too!

Municipal elections are the training ground for our next generation of leaders, they’re the building blocks for organizational strength, and they anchor community-driven priorities into our elected public leaders. Beyond Boston, we’ll have victories in Springfield, Worcester, and beyond, setting the coordinated stage for the battles to come in 2026, 2027, and 2028.

Primaries are this Tuesday, September 9th, and mark a significant milestone in growth. Groups and organizations that make up our progressive power ecosystem, such as Mass Voter Table, Neighbor to Neighbor Action Fund, Right to the City Vote, and Working Families Party, to name a few, have wasted no time. They are coordinating their capacities, resources, and strategies to engage in key municipal races this fall. This coordination is so exciting!

They are driving a multiracial, multilingual agenda rooted in housing, democracy, immigrant justice, and a solidarity economy. They are training working-class leaders and establishing progressive footholds in gateway cities. They are advancing a shared policy platform that unites issue campaigns with electoral power, expanding civic access and multilingual participation, and ensuring accountability and transparency as they participate in governance. At the same time, they are aligning the resources needed to sustain this movement.

Why Primaries Are Decisive

In Massachusetts, the Democratic primaries are the real battlegrounds since the Party dominates the elections. Winners are determined here —it takes fewer voters, less money, and less time. And whether corporate-aligned candidates hold power or community-rooted candidates break through, it’s more tied to the most politically active communities.

Progressive champions emerge here — stepping up to challenge the establishment, with the support of their local friends, colleagues, and neighbors.

The statewide agenda and priorities are shaped here — victories in municipal primaries fuel the momentum needed for ballot initiatives and long-term structural change.

This is the moment for the Block and Build strategy in the electoral field: blocking conservative and corporate greed holding our communities back, while building the power, leaders, and infrastructure to govern in the interests of people and planet.

Organizations like Right to the City Vote Boston and Neighbor to Neighbor Action Fund are leading the way. They are identifying and endorsing candidates rooted in community struggles and preparing them to become conduits in our communities’ fight to build independent political power.

By supporting both the candidates and the organizations behind them, we strengthen the progressive ecosystem that trains leaders, unites movements, and transforms policy from the ground up.

We’re entering a make-or-break moment for progressive politics in Massachusetts. As the federal landscape grows more hostile, our best defense—and our biggest opportunity—is right here at home.

Our local elected officials are the first line of defense for our communities: standing up at hearings, protecting neighbors, pushing for equity, and fighting for the future we all deserve.

Mass Alliance wrapped up its final campaign training of the year in Lowell, where 20 aspiring candidates and campaign managers learned core strategies for winning local elections—from messaging to voter engagement and turnout.

Act on Mass has been doing a transparency tour! The success of Ballot Question 1 demonstrated that citizens in every city and town in Massachusetts care about our government being transparent and accountable. With the crisis at the federal level, a state government that is effective and responsive to the needs of its citizens is more important than ever. Beacon Hill can seem worlds away, but the impacts of their inaction and lack of accountability are felt in communities across the Commonwealth.
