Building Sacred Space in a Crumbling World

Upsizing Dreams in Your Church

We are all aware of the struggle that many face as smaller congregations are holding on to larger buildings. In most cases these buildings are from a different era, and maintenance is often beyond the ability of the individual congregation to uphold, but it can be equally tasking for larger congregations or even community organizations to feel they are not fully utilizing their space in good stewardship.

The South Side Presbyterian Churches United (SSPCU) along with Moderator, Rev. Paula Cooper are interested in pursuing options for their space. They are called to continue ministry and so they, in their research, have connected to Partners for Sacred Places.

Partners for Sacred Places (PSP was founded in 1989 by a national task force of religious, historic preservation and philanthropic leaders. Partners for Sacred Places brings together a national network of expert professionals who understand the value of a congregation's architectural assets, its worth as a faith community, and the significance of its service to the community at large. Through their training programs, information clearinghouse, and professional network, they have helped congregations in all 50 states. Partners is the only national advocate for the sound stewardship and active community use of America's older religious properties. Informed by its research, Partners is building a shared sense of responsibility for the future of sacred places.

In their journey of discovery, it was agreed to offer space to other congregations within the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy to join in this endeavor. What does this cost? That is always the first question, understandably, and their services as a non-profit covers traveling expenses and assessors time and study, starting at $5,000. SSPCU is willing to write for a grant to cover the cost, but first they would like to see if there is interest among our larger church family.

If you are interested in having further information, please email Moderator Rev. Paula Cooper . The deadline is fast approaching so please take the time to respond today.

Peace be with you,
