Announcing the OSCRE Environmental Data Glossary

OSCRE has just published a glossary of terms to accompany the launch of the new Effective Environmental Data Management education program. OSCRE’s new Environmental Data Glossary contains nearly 200 terms covering more than a dozen categories such as data management, data strategy and reporting frameworks with a focus on the environment. We will be updating the Glossary regularly and would love to hear suggestions about additional terms and categories that should be included. Please contact OSCRE at info@oscre.org with your suggestions and send us the term, definition, category and reference source (if any) for any additions you’d like to propose. This will ensure that the Glossary continues to be a valuable tool to promote digital literacy in environmental data management.

Last month’s polling question took a look at what organizations are doing to address the reporting associated with local energy laws. Nearly 30% of respondents reported they have already implemented data management systems where laws have already been approved, indicating an action plan has been put in place for compliance. Gathering and reporting data in some markets followed closely at 27.8%; both responses may be reflective of where properties are physically located, such as New York City and other jurisdictions where reporting requirements have been mandated or are taking effect in the near future. 21.5% of respondents reported they are beginning to assess corporate readiness for compliance, while an equal percentage acknowledged they have no active program underway. The latter responses indicate there may be a need for organizations to accelerate development and implementation of data management systems that meet an increasing number of reporting requirements for energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions at the municipal and state levels. Consequences for lack of compliance can carry financial penalties, but also carry a negative impact for corporate reputational risk that may carry an even larger associated cost.
