Building Stability with Sarah McKeen

Sarah is a proud mom to a wonderful 19-year-old daughter and five beloved pets, and a longtime Northern Colorado resident of 18 years. After more than a decade working in the local nonprofit community and earning a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Colorado State University, she recently joined Berthoud Habitat for Humanity as the Operations Manager.

In her role, she supports the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the organization moving — from the Board of Directors governance, compliance, and procedures, accounting, KPIs, and day-to-day problem-solving.

Before joining Habitat, she spent four years on the Loveland Planning Commission. “I learned so much about housing and development from the perspective of the city, the developer, and most importantly the citizens.”

Her connection to this work is deeply personal.

“I have also struggled with housing. For most of my daughter’s childhood, I was a low-income single mom,” she says. “When you don’t have the safety of a home, everything else in your life feels insecure too.”

She lived in Section 8 housing (now known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program) via the Loveland Housing Authority. "I was lucky enough to have access to that program and even luckier to no longer need that support, but that is not the case for many people. "

Access to stable housing changed everything.

“My family needed affordable housing, and once we found it, we thrived. That security meant that I was able to go back to school, get a degree, and get a job that paid me enough to be self-sufficient without the support of the Housing Authority."

Since then, she has worked for local nonprofits and volunteered for countless hours to support and give back to our Northern Colorado community.

She’s long admired Habitat’s mission and remembers watching peers receive Habitat homes years ago.

“I've always known their work and mission to be community-centered and supportive. Since starting in this position, I've been thrilled to learn more about the full history and values of the organization that align so closely with my own.”

What excites her most about Berthoud Habitat’s future? “There’s so much opportunity,” she shares that Berthoud Habitat for Humanity has been building a pipeline of homes, and she is excited to see these homes come to fruition and for the future of those homeowners.

When asked what home means to her, her answer is: “Safety and comfort.”

And that belief is what drives her work every day — helping build systems that make home possible for others.

Introducing Berthoud-opoly

We’re excited to share a new, creative way to celebrate Berthoud and support affordable housing — Berthoud-Opoly!

This custom, Berthoud-themed board game highlights the local businesses, places, and community partners that make our town special. Berthoud-Opoly will be sold at events and community gatherings, helping share our mission in a fun and engaging way.

Local businesses have the opportunity to sponsor a property space on the board, gaining unique, long-lasting visibility while directly supporting affordable homeownership in Berthoud.

Property spaces are limited, with sponsorships available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Construction Updates

The start of 2026 has been full of progress. Our youth partnerships continue to thrive as the students in both the Geometry in Construction Program at Thompson Valley High School and the Infrastructure Engineering – Construction at Cherry Creek Innovation Campus are working hard to construct homes that are slated for the Harvest 47 subdivision. Furthermore, we are continuing on in the development review process for Majestic View while simultaneously pursuing other land acquisition opportunities.

We also kicked off the year in collaboration and consultation with Libertas/Aegis Construction Management in regard to construction management services. Their professional expertise, combined with their heart for and affinity to the Berthoud community, will be aid us in the process of ensuring a scalable, firm foundation for our Construction program in support of accelerated growth.

In addition to these updates, we are very excited to announce that we will once again host the RV Care-A-Vanners in 2026. This dedicated group of traveling Habitat for Humanity volunteers will be joining us in Berthoud around mid-September and mid-October of 2026. Their support has been invaluable in past years, and we look forward to welcoming them back — with more details to come!

This collaborative approach strengthens our capacity, supports our volunteers and staff, and positions us well as we continue to build safe, affordable homes for our neighbors.
