SPEER Member Webinar - Homeowner Engagement for Energy Efficiency Market Transformation

Join SPEER member Pearl Certification as they co-host a webinar with the Energy Efficiency Alliance, "Homeowner Engagement for Energy Efficiency Market Transformation."

It’s an exciting time for home energy efficiency, with increased tax credits available to consumers and states rolling out their federally-funded Home Energy Rebate programs. These programs will boost the market for home efficiency and electrification upgrades, but how can states, advocates, and the private sector spur a market transformation that will encourage sustained homeowner interest and commitment to efficiency after the rebate funding is expended? We need to lay the groundwork now, and one key piece will be engaging homeowners effectively.

Building a Sustainable Future: A Case for Adopting the Latest Energy Codes in Your City

In today’s world, cities play a vital role in leading the charge toward sustainability, economic growth, and improved quality of life for their residents. One of the most effective ways we can achieve these goals is by adopting the latest energy codes for new buildings and renovations. Updated energy codes provide a clear path toward smarter, more efficient building practices, reducing costs for residents, protecting our environment, and positioning our city as a leader in responsible urban growth.

1.    Lower Energy Costs for Residents and Businesses

Adopting the latest energy codes would ensure that new buildings in our city are built to significantly reduce energy use. Buildings constructed to meet the latest standards consume 30-40% less energy on average than those built to outdated codes. These savings directly benefit residents and business owners by lowering utility bills—a tangible way to make housing and commercial spaces more affordable and attractive.

2.    Reducing the City’s Environmental Impact

Climate change is a pressing concern, and buildings account for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through heating, cooling, and lighting. The latest energy codes call for better insulation, more efficient HVAC systems, and advanced lighting, which all help reduce energy consumption. By reducing emissions tied to our city’s buildings, we can make a meaningful contribution to environmental health, improve air quality, and align with state and national goals for lowering our carbon footprint. This is especially important as cities are increasingly evaluated on their sustainability practices.

3.    Improved Quality of Life and Health

Modern energy codes emphasize well-designed ventilation systems and higher insulation standards, which lead to cleaner indoor air and more consistent temperatures. In cities with diverse weather patterns, this is crucial: energy-efficient HVAC systems can maintain comfort in both hot and cold months without excessive energy use. Residents of buildings meeting the latest codes experience fewer drafts, more stable indoor temperatures, and better air quality—benefits that support overall health and well-being.

4.    Increasing Property Values and Attracting Investment

Properties that meet the latest energy codes are typically more desirable to buyers, renters, and investors. There’s growing demand for energy-efficient buildings as people become more conscious of their environmental impact and their energy costs. By adopting the latest codes, our city would make it easier for developers to meet these demands, leading to increased property values and attracting responsible investment from businesses committed to sustainability. This enhances our city’s reputation as an attractive place to live and work.

5.    Futureproofing Our Community

By implementing the latest energy codes, we’re not only addressing today’s needs but preparing for the future. These codes are designed with advancements in building technology and sustainability in mind, making it easier to adapt to future standards, integrate renewable energy sources, and comply with emerging regulations. Buildings constructed to today’s standards will be more adaptable to future upgrades and better positioned to meet the energy challenges of tomorrow.

Adopting the latest energy codes is a forward-thinking decision that brings immediate benefits to residents and positions our city for long-term success. By voting to adopt these codes, you are taking critical steps to lower costs, reduce our city’s environmental impact, enhance the quality of life for residents, and secure a brighter, more sustainable future for all. Thank you for your consideration.
