This month, Washington received approval for FEMA aid to address the devastating floods that resulted in disaster emergency declarations from thirteen counties and seven tribal nations. These kinds of disasters, which are so disruptive to homeowners and entire communities, are becoming more frequent as our climate changes. As we navigate environmental challenges across our state, I’m encouraged and inspired by so many of you. Across our network, I see people stepping up to shape policy, prepare communities before disaster strikes, and show up in powerful ways during recovery and rebuilding.
April also calls us to reaffirm our commitment to Fair Housing. At a time when there are real and growing threats at the national level, our work here in Washington matters even more. I see our shared commitment in the way this network continues to center equity in homeownership. This is the moment to speak up, not to let up. We must engage with elected leaders, with our networks, and with all members of our communities, to remind them why Fair Housing still matters, and to recognize that discrimination is not a thing of the past.
And as we celebrate Financial Literacy Month, I’m reminded that increasing supply, while urgently needed, is only part of the equation. We must continue to invest in and elevate the vital work of housing counselors and financial educators. From ensuring equitable access to high-quality homeownership education, to increasing awareness of resources like WHRC’s free hotline, our role is to make sure people have both opportunities and the support to make use of them successfully. Financial literacy and ongoing access to reliable tools and information are more important now, as households face an intense affordability crunch.
Our network of financial educators is ready to support first-time homebuyers wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford their dream, and we are likewise available to help existing homeowners facing mortgage, property tax, or HOA delinquency, and much more.
Thank you for all you do, for being the movers, shakers, trouble-makers, and champions working every day to increase and preserve homeownership across Washington. Keep making waves like our planet, our rights, and our futures depend on it.
