Bulk Plant Bio Upgrade Success Story

As we enter 2026 and enjoy the better degree days then we have seen in a while, we'd like to reflect back on a success story from last year. With the assistance of a fantastic team of engineers, contractors, electricians and other personnel, we completed a major Bio upgrade for the Durkin family at their plant in Carmel, NY. We were tasked with upgrading their Terminal to allow for the blending of Biofuel and Biodiesel onsite. Over the course of 6 months we were able to construct a site to allow for them to generate blends up to B50 to conform to current and future Bio mandates. We'd like to thank all that assisted us in this project with special thanks to the USDA grant program which helped to allow this project to get off the ground. Below are highlights of the upgrade.

HERE'S WHERE THEY WERE BEFORE

HERE'S WHERE THEY ARE AFTER

Highlights of what was provided

Truck Offload Station

  • (3) Gorman-Rupp Roto-Prime Pumps
  • Dedicated Diesel, Heating Oil and B99 Bio Stations. B99 pump and lines were individually insulated and heat traced
  • Concrete surface with containment
  • Pneumercator Tank Gauge Monitoring System with remote readout for high level control

Enclosed Truck Loading Station

  • All truck loading occurs inside a weather protected building with lighting system to allow for the loading rack to be used at any time day or night and through all weather conditions.
  • New loading rack designed for safe top loading of straight jobs and trailers
  • Operation allows for trucks to load on either side of the rack at the same time

Electronic Preset Controlled Truck Loading

  • Electronic preset controlled truck loading allows for safe, precise loads each time with accurate reporting and recording within the site's automation system provided by GVM.
  • The automation system provides the owner with the ability to view loading operations in real time which allows for accurate customer allocations
  • The system will also advise on any issues during the loading operation and ways to correct

Enclosed Bio-Blend Station

  • The site has the ability to create blends up to B50 utilizing Savage Ratio Blending.
  • Within the enclosed cabinet are a series of main product meters and control valves set-up to allow for multiple blend ratios of Bio and diesel and/or #2 oil. The backbone of this operation are the Guidant Genesis meters which provide up to a 50:1 turndown. The meters work in coordination with our electronic preset and control valves to provide the bio blend required by each customer loading at the rack.

Truck Loading Rack Pump Station

  • Gorman-Rupp 60 Series Centrifigal Pumps for Heating Oil, Diesel and Bio transfer to the Rack
  • Heating Oil and Diesel positions set-up utilizing duplex pumps to allow for loading on increased flow rate demands based on the number of trucks loading without stressing the system

PLC/MCC/Heat Control Station

  • A system this large calls for additional controls behind the scenes
  • Our friends at PICS Inc. helped design, program and install the PLC panel which manages the pump and motor operated valve demands through the system
  • Storing B99 requires a heated tank and system. Faber provided us with an immersion heater system which monitors and controls the temperature of the product in storage

Replacement Aboveground Horizontal Tanks

  • We brought in (4) 50,000 gallon and (2) 25,000 gallon tanks from Highland Tank to support the demands of the site
  • One of the 25,000 tanks was insulated and provided with an insertion heater system and controls for B99 use
  • All tanks located inside a fabricated building to provide protection from the elements

Diesel Truck Filling Station

  • We designed our own filling station to load diesel into the fuel tanks of the site's fleet trucks.
  • The purpose was to allow for the volume through this system to be read within our automation system.
  • Utilizing a standard meter pulse output into a stand alone electronic preset with valve control allowed us to accomplish this

If your plant is in need of an update or are interested in bringing BioDiesel or Renewable Diesel storage and blending into your plant's inventory, please reach out to us for more information. We can present you with a plan which will include estimated costs and timeframe so you can make your decision. We can also help you navigate the USDA grant process if adding bio is something you are looking at.
