A Message From Your Principal
Dear Ross Families,

Thank you for a stellar first month of the school year. We appreciate all of your support with our initiatives and the extra time you've all spent as we've worked to get everyone back into our school routines. Hopefully, the excitement your children are exhibiting when they come home from school has been just a small sign of things to come during the remainder of the school year.

I want to remind everyone that our D23 Family Movie Night is finally here. It will begin tonight at 6:45 PM in the field behind MacArthur Middle School. Please feel free to arrive and begin gathering as early as 6:00 PM as we will be engaging as a community to enjoy Pixar's Monsters University. Concessions will also be available through the D23 PTO. Please plan to bring your own blankets for seating. A huge thank you goes out to the D23 PTO for partnering with District 23 in sponsoring this wonderful event.

Additionally, we are proud to announce that our goal to keep students in school can be supported by a screening and testing process currently being planned for District 23. Through a partnership with the Federal and State governments, the SHIELD Illinois program is now available to all schools in Illinois, free of charge. This 3rd party laboratory analysis uses the SHIELD saliva-based test developed by the University of Illinois. More information can be found HERE. We hope to launch weekly screening and on-demand testing to monitor local community spread, identify presymptomatic or asymptomatic cases, and assist in making informed quarantining decisions. It is our goal to begin on October 1st. Participation is optional but requires parental consent. Please complete this form if you are interested in your child participating in this program. More information and details will be shared as it becomes available.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Dr. Craig Curtis

Raving About Ross
Spectacular 2nd Graders
Students in Mrs. Schoeny's class use number cards in math to practice their addition and subtraction skills. This math game also helped with doubles facts!
Thriving 3rd Graders
Third grade is learning about main idea and details as they read "Penguin Chicks." Some interesting facts they discovered are that father penguins keep the egg on their feet while the mom penguin searches for food. Why is that? 1. To keep the egg from instantly freezing it cannot touch the frozen ground and 2. Mom looks for food first since she is smaller than dad and has less fat to stay alive while keeping the egg warm. These are just a few cool facts third grade has learned about penguin chicks!
Supporting Our Bulldogs
The Betsy Ross Reading Specialists are busy getting to know all the students. They are popping into classrooms either to read a story, help out with literacy and/or district assessments. Pictured here are Ms. Brusso's and Mrs. Schoeny's 2nd grade classrooms.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
This year, our parent-teacher conferences will be held virtually between October 25th and November 12th. Please be on the lookout for a communication from your child's teacher with times available to schedule a conference. Conferences will generally run between 15 and 20 minutes. If you require a translator for your conference, please let your child's teacher know.
Bulldog Beliefs Expectations
At Betsy Ross, we pride ourselves on being respectful, responsible, and safe at school and within the community. Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, which we call the Bulldog Beliefs, focuses on rewarding students for making positive choices and celebrating the successes we achieve as a team.

As you know, we've been earning Bulldog Bucks for following our Bulldog Beliefs expectations throughout the school day. Have you taken a moment out of your evening to ask your child how many Bulldog Bucks they've earned and what they've earned them for? Today, during school, we redeemed our Bulldog Bucks for prizes from the reward menu below. We're very excited to claim our prizes next week!

Additionally, Betsy Ross students are also in the middle of our Bulldog Beliefs Challenge. Our current challenge is raising a quiet hand and waiting your turn in class. Each classroom fills out a Google Form as a class and has a discussion about how they did toward this goal on Fridays weekly. Our goal is to earn a score of at least a "2" on the form 80% of the time. If we achieve our goal, we'll earn a special prize at the end of our challenge. So far, after 2 weeks of voting, our students have scored a "3" by exceeding expectations 26% of the time, a "2" by meeting expectations 71% of the time, and a "1" meaning we'll try again next time. This means that our goal is set at 80% and we are currently scoring at around 98%. Keep up the great work, Bulldogs!

Tech Night Follow-Ups
Thank you to everyone who took the time out of their busy schedules to join us for our various tech nights over the past couple of weeks. Hopefully, you found them valuable in learning more about how we use technology within the district, whether it be Seesaw Class or Seesaw Family here at the elementary level or Schoology at the middle school level. If you were unable to join us for the presentations but are still interested in the topics, you can click on the links below to access the information from our elementary presentations. It is extremely important that parents "opt-in" and subscribe to Seesaw Family as it is one of our district's main sources of communication for grades K-5. As a result, we highly recommend that all parents review the Seesaw Family presentation below.
