The deadline to submit your news, events and announcements for next week's Bulldog Weekly is 2 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 31, because of the Labor Day holiday.

National Anthem Singer Needed for Convocation


We will be formally welcoming the incoming A-Section students into the Kettering community at New Student Convocation at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in the Connie and Jim John Recreation Center. 


A volunteer is needed to sing the national anthem at Convocation. If you are interested, email Jeremy Sanders at [email protected].

Institutional Review Board Needs Feedback


The Kettering Institutional Review Board (IRB) wants your feedback as it revises the "University Policy 15: Human Subjects Policy" and "Institutional Review Board Charter and Standard Operating Procedures."


To provide your feedback on the issue, please complete this short survey. All comments are due by this Thursday, Aug. 31.

Work on Campus Center Ongoing


Work on the facade above the fifth-floor windows of the Campus Center continues through Oct. 16. Crews are removing old brick and installing a new fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) panel in its place.


Barricades may be placed to direct all foot traffic; minor detours may be necessary; and some exits or entrances may be closed.

'Batik and Belonging: Discovering My Dual Threads of Identity on Campus' Today

 

The Asian American Association will host Timo Budiono '21 from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. today in Room A on the fourth floor of the Campus Center.


Budiono will present "Batik and Belonging: Discovering My Dual Threads of Identity on Campus." He earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Industrial Engineering from Kettering University and works as a Senior Analyst at Accenture.

SAC Speaker Today

 

The Student Alumni Council (SAC) welcomes you to an Alumni Speaker Event with Kelly Lewis '95 at 12:20 p.m. today in BJ's Lounge.

 

Lewis is a senior mechanical engineer in the Chassis and Safety Division at Continental Automotive. She has held various leadership roles in Continental's Chassis and Safety Division and the Electronic Brake System Group.

 

Lewis earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University and a Master's degree in Industrial Operations from Lawrence Technical University.

 

Lunch will be provided to the first 25 people to register.

SPE Guest Speaker Today



The Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE) will host a guest speaker from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. today in Room 2225 of the Academic Building.


Mary Gilliam, staff researcher in General Motors Lightweight Systems Manufacturing Research, will speak about research and development activities, including adhesion and bonding, interface engineering, surface treatment and more.

ME Department Head Candidate Presentation Schedule

Candidates for the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department will give presentations on the following dates:


  • 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. today in Room 1-819 of the Academic Building: Dr. Mehmut Reyhanoglu will present "Academic Experience, Leadership Style and Vision for Mechanical Engineering at Kettering." Reyhanoglu is the Director and Professor of Robotics Engineering at Columbus State University. He earned his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has three Master's degrees covering Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
  • 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Room 1-819 of the Academic Building: Dr. Daryoush Allaei will present "Forward-Looking Perspective on the Mechanical Engineering Department." Allaei is the CEO at QRDC Inc. in Excelsior, Minnesota. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Master's degree and Ph.D. in Mechanics from Purdue University.


Lunch will be provided to the first 20 attendees for both presentations.

RSVP for Detroit Tigers Game on Wednesday



The KSG Operations Council has free tickets to see the Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox at 6:40 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 8, at Comerica Park in Detroit.


The bus leaves Kettering at 5 p.m. Tickets include a $10 food voucher. Availability is limited.


An RSVP form will be emailed to students at 12:20 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 30. Be on the lookout!

ASA Spaghetti Dinner on Wednesday



Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) will host a spaghetti dinner from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, Aug. 30, at Alpha Sigma Alpha Manor, 924 E. Sixth St.


Gluten-free options will be available.


Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Cash and Venmo (@BMScott) are accepted. Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics.

Naval Nuclear Power Engineering Presentation on Thursday



The Co-op and Industrial Engineering/Electrical Engineering departments will host a presentation on naval nuclear power engineering opportunities from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 31, in the Cowger Kiva on the first floor of the Learning Commons.


The presentation will include information regarding the U.S. Navy's nuclear propulsion program, naval nuclear power, service options, training pipeline, naval missions and opportunities the Navy has for engineers.


Lunch will be provided to the first 30 guests.

Senior Night on Thursday

Celebrate College Colors Day on Friday



Across the United States, students, parents, family, faculty, fans and alumni celebrate College Colors Day every year on the Friday before Labor Day.


This year's College Colors Day is this Friday, Sept. 1. By rocking your college colors and apparel, you show spirit and school pride.


Wear your Kettering University gear, then join UMC from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 1, outside the Battenberg Cafe in the Learning Commons to have your photo taken to be featured in the University's social media channels for College Colors Day.

Pool Movie Night on Sept. 5


The KSG Operations Council will host a movie night from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the pool in the Rec Center.


The featured film will be "Shark Tale."

Advocacy Day on Sept. 6


The Wellness Center is partnering with the YWCA of Flint for Advocacy Days. An advocate from the YWCA Greater Flint will be at the Wellness Center to support individuals who have directly experienced intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault or who may know individuals affected.


Through private, one-on-one sessions, an advocate can:


  • Discuss available services through the YWCA Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program
  • Discuss the dynamics of an abusive relationship
  • Conduct a needs assessment
  • Offer goal and safety planning as well as referrals to community services
  • Assist with completing a personal protection order and describe the court process


YWCA Advocacy Days will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Wellness Center.

Passport Workshop on Sept. 6



The Office of International Programs (OIP) will host a Passport Workshop from noon to 1:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 6, in the CETL Collaboration Room, 3-345, of the Academic Building.


The goal of the workshop is to enlighten students about the importance of owning a U.S. passport. It is best suited for students who may need guidance with the passport application process but is open to anyone. This is a perfect opportunity for students considering studying abroad to get support during this process. The OIP will also provide passport photos for all students who attend.

Make a Calming Jar on Sept. 6



The Wellness Center will lead students in making their own calming jars from 6 to 8 pm. next Wednesday, Sept. 6 in the Asahi Kasei Traverse (Learning Commons connector).


Students can use the calming jars as they prepare for finals.

Outdoor Bulldog Movie Night on Sept. 7



The Kettering Student Government and Student Life will host an outdoor Bulldog Movie Night from 8 to 11 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Koegel Plaza outside the Learning Commons.


The featured movie is "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."


Come out for fun yard games, cotton candy, snow cones, candy, popcorn and a giveaway!


Bring chairs and blankets to sit on.

Powerlifting Competitions on Sept. 10, 13



The Rec Center will host two Powerlifting Competitions in September at the Rec Center.


The first is a women's competition, which will be at noon Sunday, Sept. 10. The second is open to anyone and is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13.


For both competitions, participants must arrive 30 minutes early to sign in and properly warm up. Entry forms will be available at the competition or at the front desk of the Rec Center. To check out the entry form packet, click here.

Alumni Connections Week Event on Sept. 12


Faculty, staff and seniors are invited to join the Alumni Engagement Office and Kettering alumni to celebrate Connections Week from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Tenacity Brewery, 119 N. Grand Traverse St.


Please bring an outdoor toy or book to donate to Flint elementary schools.

Sign up to Volunteer at the Food Bank by Sept. 13


Volunteers are needed for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan's 33rd Annual Empty Bowls event to help serve soups, bus tables, set up and take down.


The event is Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Food Bank's Hunger Solution Center, 1939 Howard Ave. Volunteers can choose from working the lunch shift from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or the dinner shift from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.


Volunteers should wear black pants and a white shirt. To volunteer, complete this waiver.

Therapy Dogs to Visit on Sept. 13


The Wellness Center will host therapy dogs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Koegel Plaza outside the Learning Commons.


The goal is to give the Kettering Community a chance to de-stress with therapy dogs and Tate, the University's therapy dog. The event will be in BJ's Lounge if there is inclement weather.

Tutoring Available on Sept. 14


The KSG Academic Council and the Academic Success Center will provide tutoring from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Sunset Room on the first floor of the Campus Center.

Finals Care Packages Available on Sept. 15


The KSG Academic Council will give out finals care packages from 12:20 to 1:20 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Magna Knowledge Bar on the first floor of the Learning Commons.


Come and pick up some treats.

Rho Lambda Initiates Three New Members


The Delta Phi chapter of Rho Lambda initiated three new members Aug. 23.


The organization honors women within the Greek community who have been outstanding in the display of demonstrated leadership, ability and loyalty to the Greek community and their sororities.

Teal Ribbons Raise Awareness for Ovarian Cancer


Teal ribbons will be tied to trees around campus starting Sept. 1 in partnership with the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance.


September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.


The earlier the diagnosis, the better the prognosis. Possible symptoms include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary issues (urgency or frequency).


See your doctor if any of these systems are new and occur more than 12 times in one month.
