Nobel Prize winner Patrick Modiano
A few weeks ago, a Frenchman won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature: Patrick Modiano, the quiet yet prolific writer was humbly surprised when he got the news and was almost speechless, stumbling on words when interviewed by a mob of journalists, flooding his apartment with countless camera flashes, bouncing off the many glistening microphones, inches from his bumbling mouth. To the surprise of the crowd, he hesitantly stated that he had been writing the same book all his life, "in a discontinued fashion". This statement was greeted with congenial laughter. Prior to the Nobel crown, he had already won many industry accolades, including the Grand Prix de L'Academie Francaise, the Prix Goncourt, the Austrian State Price for European Literature and the Prix mondial Cino Del Duca from the Institut de France for lifetime achievement. Other prizes include the German Preis der SWR-Bestenliste for the 2010 release of the German translation of his first published book La Place de L'Etoile. Jean Patrick Modiano is 69 years old and lives in Paris.

Another Frenchman, Jean Tirole, won the 2014 Novel Prize in Economics. Read about him next month in this newsletter.

What's better than taking a French class, getting a friend to take one, too, and both of you winning fabulous prize baskets?
Our next semester of French classes will start in January. The new year is a perfect time to start learning the beautiful French language, or to renew the love of studying French. We have come up with a fun new incentive to take a class this coming January: a raffle, and here is how it works. When an Alliance member refers a new student to one of our language classes and the student signs up for a class, the names of both the Alliance member and the new language student will be entered into the raffle. Both members of the winning duo will each win a basket filled with a generous amount of office supplies, the perfect aid to successful study. More information on available classes will soon be posted on the website.
Refer a friend to a language class, and bonne chance!
