St. Gertrude Teens Serve Across Chicagoland During Mission Experience

From June 22-26, St. Gertrude teens put their faith into action during this year's Teen Mission Experience, serving at organizations across Chicagoland while growing in faith and friendship.

Throughout the week, the group volunteered at The Friendship Center, Feed My Starving Children, Misericordia, and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Whether preparing meals, packing food, assisting adults with disabilities, or helping fight hunger, our teens generously shared their time, energy, and compassion.

Each day included prayer and community building as participants explored Christ's call to love and serve others. The week concluded with a fun movie and pizza day to celebrate new friendships and reflect on the experience.

Special thanks to Jennifer Reyes, Pat Sullivan, and Maria Carlos for their leadership, encouragement, and care throughout the week. Thank you to our teens and everyone who helped make this year's Teen Mission Experience a meaningful week of faith, service, and joy.

Care for Real Collection is This Weekend

Our next collection for Care for Real will take place July 4-5. As a reminder, St. Gertrude collects donations for Care for Real on the first and fourth weekends of each month. Donations may be placed in the church vestibule.

As economic pressures continue to affect many households, Care for Real is seeing increased demand for food and essential supplies. Changes to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) eligibility and reporting requirements may create additional challenges for some neighbors, particularly older adults and others facing barriers to meeting program requirements.

Your donations help Care for Real respond to these growing needs and ensure that individuals and families in our community have access to nutritious food and basic necessities.

To view Care for Real's most-needed items or learn other ways to support its mission, visit linktr.ee/cfrchicago or follow Care for Real on Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you for helping care for our neighbors with compassion and generosity. Every contribution makes a difference.

Wednesday Mornings: Find

Stillness in Prayer

Set aside time each week to rest in God's presence through contemplative prayer. This welcoming group gathers on Wednesdays at 9:00 am in the Ministry Center chapel (6214 N. Glenwood Ave.) for silent prayer, reflection on Scripture, and spiritual reading.

Whether you're exploring contemplative prayer for the first time or have an established practice, you'll find a supportive community and gentle guidance. Come when you can and participate at your own pace.

Growing in Faith: The Mystery of Knowing God

When planning our father’s funeral Mass several years ago, my family chose a popular Gospel reading (John 14:1–6). It’s the one that begins with Jesus saying, “Do not let your hearts be troubled,” and ends with something we wanted to (but didn’t) cut: “Nobody comes to the Father except through me.” We knew a fair number of non-Christians would be in attendance, including Jewish friends, a Muslim caregiver, and a bunch of kind and generous “nones.”

My heart, long troubled by such seemingly exclusionary language, has found some solace in what C.S. Lewis wrote about salvation in his book Mere Christianity: “Is it not frightfully unfair that this new life should be confined to people who have heard of Christ and been able to believe in him? But the truth is, God has not told us what His arrangements about the other people are. We do know that no man can be saved except through Christ. We do not know that only those who know Him can be saved through Him.”

I find further assurance in a verse from today’s Gospel reading (Matthew 11:27): “No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him” (my italics). To borrow Lewis’s reasoning, Jesus can make God known to anyone at all, and we do not know that only those whom we think know God actually do know God. Whew!
