Mission Appeal Planned for July 12-13

Each summer the Global Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago facilitates the Mission Cooperation Plan, an opportunity for about 82 foreign missionary dioceses, religious congregations and organizations to share their stories and invite support from our faith communities.

This annual second collection provides vital support to ministries that witness and proclaim the love of Jesus in areas of the world affected by poverty and upheaval. Missionaries travel great distances to evangelize in remote and persecuted communities. They form priests and lay leaders, educate adults and children, offer medical care, provide safe homes, administer the Sacraments and more.

Sr. Rubi Arellano, a Sister from the Servants of the Visitation, will visit St. Gertrude on July 12–13 as part of the Missionary Cooperative Plan. With 29 years of missionary life, Sr. Rubi serves vulnerable children in Brazil and the Philippines.

She will share the mission of the Ain Karim Children’s Home—the only accredited orphanage in Eastern Samar, Philippines—offering a loving home to children who are disabled, malnourished, orphaned, and abandoned.

"Brewed at St. Gertrude" Social Gathering is Sunday, July 20

Please join us on Sunday, July 20, for a parish hospitality event, "Brewed at St. Gertrude!"

Following the 10:30 am mass, come to the Social Hall for pastries, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. All are welcome: new and long-time parishioners, families, and visitors!

Commonweal Action: Next Meeting Planned for July 20

St. Gertrude’s Commonweal Action will meet again on Sunday, July 20, in the Social Hall after the 10:30 am Mass.

At our June 22 meeting, we discussed the results of the "Faith in Action" survey and, in small groups, began planning ways to respond to those results by opposing the current administration’s unchristian policies—policies that harm the poor, the elderly, children, immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and veterans.

Commonweal Action is committed to protecting access to healthcare (Medicaid) and food (SNAP), ensuring safety from wrongful deportation, and upholding the dignity of our most vulnerable neighbors. We take action through protests, letter-writing, educational efforts, and collaboration with like-minded community groups.

To move forward with the plans we’ve developed, we need your input, your energy, and your help!

Please join us on Sunday, July 20, around noon in St. Gertrude’s Social Hall—after the 10:30 am Mass and once everyone has had a chance to grab a coffee and connect at Brewed at St. Gertrude’s social gathering. The meeting will last approximately 90 minutes.

All are welcome.

Growing in Faith

Seventy-five years ago, in the movie Summer Stock, an elegant Judy Garland sings, “Forget your troubles, c'mon, get happy. You better chase all your cares away. Shout hallelujah, c'mon get happy. Get ready for the judgement day.”

That could be the theme song of this weekend’s readings. In Luke’s gospel, Jesus sends forth 72 disciples in pairs to bring peace and the good news, and they come back rejoicing. The responsorial refrain is “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy, ”and the verses are from Psalm 66, beginning: “Shout joyfully to God, all the earth,/sing praise to the glory of his name;/proclaim his glorious praise./Say to God, ‘How

tremendous are your deeds!’ ”

The first reading really goes whole hog into the idea of joy, inviting the faithful to

relate to God (through the metaphor of Jerusalem) as our doting mother: “Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her…Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts!…As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms and fondled in her lap; as a mother

comforts her child, so will I comfort you.”

In following Jesus, we are called — sent out to the world — to be as fully human as we

can, to live our lives so that we are fully alive, especially to each other. We do that

by following in Jesus’s footsteps, and, in that way, we find the deepest happiness

possible. So, rejoice because God is our Mother and our Father and our Brother and

our inspiring Spirit and because we — all of us — are a family, together, one body.

C’mon, get happy.

~ Patrick T. Reardon

  • Build a deeper personal relationship with God through prayer and reflection.
  • Learn to pray as an individual and as part of a community.
  • Discover ways to love and serve others in our day-to-day lives.
  • Appreciate what it means to be part of a welcoming, loving community that cares for and respects people from all walks of life.
  • Deepen their knowledge of the Catholic tradition.
