From Fr. Mike Gabriel

We are already celebrating the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, leading to the culmination of this beautiful season of New Life with the Feast of Pentecost. In our Gospels, Jesus is preparing His disciples for the great gift of the Holy Spirit, “who will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” Wow—what a gift!

We all need to be reminded and renewed in the confidence that this is the same gift of the Holy Spirit we first received at Baptism, were sealed with at Confirmation, and continue to receive every time we partake in the Eucharist. This gift far surpasses anything the world can offer—no matter how expensive, impressive, or valuable—and yet it is so easily minimized or taken for granted.

It is truly a “use it or lose it” kind of gift, one that has the power to transform us into powerful witnesses of the Risen Lord and faithful disciples. Jesus gives us His peace “not as the world gives peace,” which is often temporary and fragile, but as a lasting peace—one that enables our hearts to be free from fear and trouble.

However, this peace comes with a call: we must surrender to the ultimate power and authority of God, avoiding false gods or the illusion that we are in control. Only when we truly allow God to be God do we experience the fullness of His peace.

As we approach Pentecost, prepare your heart to renew the gift of the Holy Spirit within you.

Join us on June 7th and 8th as we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost! We invite everyone to wear something red when you come to Mass.

Next Weekend, We Celebrate Fr. Mike Gabriel's as He Retires!

For information about helping out at the party and special efforts to celebrate his years of ministry, please read below!

Baked Goods Needed for Father Mike Gabriel’s Retirement Celebration - Drop Them Off Saturday or Sunday!

After years of dedicated service, Father Mike Gabriel is heading into a well-deserved retirement—and we want to send him off with all the love and gratitude he deserves!

We are looking for parishioners to bring or make baked goods for the party! To make it easier, there will be someone in the Gym accepting drop offs on Saturday June 7 from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm and on Sunday June 8 from 9:00 - 10:00 am. Otherwise, you can bring your sweets to the event after mass 10:30 am mass on June 8th.

Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to assist with the following:

  • Set-up & clean-up in the Social Hall
  • Staffing during the event, including monitoring food and beverages

If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Michael Kowalsky at mkowalsky@rcn.com or call 773.633.6692.

Thank you in advance for your help—and we look forward to celebrating together!

Letters of Gratitude

As a part of our celebration of Father Mike, we would like to compile a book of letters from St. Gertrude parishioners, and from the many people he has served in his 41 years as priest. It would be a very special remembrance for him as he begins his retirement, and is indeed a perfect gift!

There will be a table at the reception where people can write a note of thanks and good wishes for the future.

But if you would like to compose your letter beforehand, it would allow you more time to include some memories, stories, and perhaps include a picture.

You can send your letter:

  • Via email to marinaparise@gmail.com
  • By sending it to the parish office to the attention of Eduardo, 1420 W Granville Ave, Chicago, IL, 60660
  • By bringing it to the reception on June 8

Thank you!

Second Collection on June 7-8 for Priests’ Health and Retirement

Priests have dedicated their lives to ministry, serving our needs as Catholics from the moment we are baptized until we receive last rites before entering eternal life. A second collection on June 7-8 will provide for the health and well-being of 386 active and 247 retired archdiocesan priests.

Your generosity to this special collection directly impacts both the many active and retired archdiocesan priests who we have come to rely on throughout our lives.

As we’re all aware, healthcare and retirement costs continue to rise, so there is an urgent need for your gifts to this fund. Your generosity will not only ensure the health and well-being of our priests, but also support their ability to continue meaningful work in our parishes and communities.

Collection Drive for Care for Real is June 7-8

Our next collection drive for Care for Real is June 7-8!

Care for Real is urgently seeking donations of new socks and underwear, diapers in sizes 4-6, shampoo, hand soap, and adult incontinence briefs.

Our collection drive for Care for Real is always the fourth calendar weekend every month, and our asylum seekers’ collection is the first weekend of each month.

We are so grateful for your help supporting Care for Real as they work to provide food and much-needed supplies to our neighbors who are struggling.

Friendship Club is Thursday, June 12

The St. Gertrude Women's Friendship Club meets monthly on the second Thursday of every month in the Ministry Center.

The gathering begins at 11:30 am, and attendees should bring their own (brown bag) lunch.

Growing in Faith: The Ascension of Jesus, and the Joy of Hope

Last year, on the Feast of the Ascension, dear Pope Francis announced the theme of the Jubilee Year 2025 as HOPE. I feel that was prophetic, don’t you? For Pope Francis, the completion of Jesus’ life on earth is a fulfillment of the faithfulness and love of God for us, and God’s desire that we experience confidence and joy—the joy experienced by the witnesses to Jesus’ Ascension as they returned to the city with that new hope. I find his words so helpful:

Pope Francis said that day:

“...Christian hope sustains the journey of our lives, even when the road ahead seems winding and exhausting. It opens our eyes to future possibilities whenever resignation or pessimism attempt to imprison us. It makes us see the promise of good at times when evil seems to prevail... It makes us dream of a new humanity and gives us courage in our efforts to build a fraternal and peaceful world, even when it seems barely worth the effort. By our actions, our words, the decisions we make each day, our patient efforts to sow seeds of beauty and kindness wherever we find ourselves, we want to sing of hope, so that its melody can touch the heartstrings of humanity and reawaken in every heart the joy and the courage to embrace life to the full.”

Join St. Gertrude parishioners and other members of faith communities in Edgewater at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church as we honor freedom and justice with a message from Annamarie Brown, Co-Executive Director of Circles and Ciphers, and a moving performance by Circles and Ciphers themselves.

This is more than a service—it’s a call to community and a celebration of resilience.

What is ECRA?

The Edgewater Community Religious Association (ECRA) is an interfaith association of religious organizations that work toward fostering friendships and understanding of other faiths and to nurture a thriving and just neighborhood.
