From Fr. Mike Gabriel

This Sunday is Father’s Day. I'd like to dedicate this message to all the wonderful fathers, father figures, and male mentors who have touched so many lives, whether your own kids, others' kids, family, folks mentored or coached, and the world-at-large.

Fathers are heroes for all that they do: from teaching us how to ride bikes to ensuring we were picked up on time for our music classes or sports practices – our fathers have lovingly cared for us since childhood.

Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for being you. We appreciate your existence and the often silent but impactful role you have played in our lives.

As we give tribute to and celebrate our love for our fathers (and mothers) by way of words and actions, I am especially grateful for my dad, who will be 95 in August. Although his dementia and physical difficulty is getting worse, every week I am blessed to be with him.

My father did all he could do to make sure we had a great education and a roof over our heads. He worked seven days a week from 5 am until too late. He is humorous, and I never saw him sick or complaining. He says repeatedly, “And life goes on.” He suffered a lot because of my mom’s illnesses and death and showed us how life goes on.

Show your dad (and your mom) some love today, tomorrow, and every day. Give him a card. Take him out for dinner. Give him a hug. Share your joy with him. Celebrate the kinship you have together.

Priests' Convocation

Next week, from June 17-21, is the Priests' Convocation. Please pray for all the priests of the archdiocese, so they can serve the people of God. All weekday masses throughout the diocese will be communion services.

Here, we will have communion services on Thursday, June 20, Friday, June 21, and the morning of Saturday, June 22. I will not be able to attend the conference, I will be away Wednesday until Saturday afternoon.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I ask that you support and pray for all priests this coming week.

Lord Jesus Christ, eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly people a share in your redeeming sacrifice.

Hear our prayer for all the priests of this Archdiocese of Chicago, especially as they gather in convocation. Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial priesthood may be ever more conformed to you, the divine Master, the Good Shepherd.

May they preach the Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience. Let them be shepherds according to your own Heart, single-minded in service to you and to the Church

and shining examples of a holy, simple and joyful life.

Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, draw all priests and the flocks entrusted to their care to the fullness of eternal life where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Commonweal Dialogue Returns This Friday, June 14

Commonweal Dialogue is returning to St. Gertrude’s Parish this June!

Commonweal Dialogue provides opportunities for civil and cordial conversation about topics of contemporary concern at the intersection of faith and politics.

We plan to meet several times a year and to alternate Sunday afternoon tea parties with Friday evening wine and pizza events in the hope that as many people as possible will be able to participate. The readings we have selected we believe will encourage meaningful and enlightening conversation.

Topic: Please read Ursula K. LeGuin’s very short sci fi story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas (available online). This story symbolically raises questions about inequality, individual human suffering, and the common good in many areas of our contemporary social and political life. (Even if you don’t have time to read the story, join us anyway, and we’ll get you up to speed so you can join in the discussion.)

The first meeting will be held on the evening of Friday, June 14 at 6:30 pm in the backyard of John Williams, 1305 West Glenlake in Chicago.

Please RSVP so we know how much pizza to buy! Email Denise DeBelle at ddebelle@gmail.com, John Williams at joolikar@gmail.com, or Verna Foster at vfoster@luc.edu.

Rectory Office Closed on Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans and is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.

The rectory office will be closed. Mass will be held at 7:30 am.

Food & Supply Drive for Care for Real - June 22 & June 23

Growing in Faith

Happy Father’s Day!

When kids are little, they need our guidance. Our kids have all graduated from high school; two have graduated from college.

In this week’s second reading, St Paul talks about courage. For the past several years, I’ve been trying to muster the courage to let my kids confront the slings and arrows of life without having to endure advice from me.

At our kids’ ages, I am getting the sense that my attempts to offer sage counsel are

more likely to get in the way. Feeling like I’ve been through it myself, I might think I

know the exact message they need to hear. Even if that’s the case, I’m figuring out that

I’m not well positioned to be the deliverer of messages like that anymore. Advice from a

parent can often feel like judgment. They are perceptive young adults and will learn

what life has to teach them when they are ready. They need to learn those lessons by

experiencing life’s ups and downs. If they want my advice, they’ll ask for it.

I pray for the courage to let our wonderful kids live their lives and spare them my hard-

won wisdom. I’ll do much more good if I communicate to them that I have supreme

confidence in their ability to find their path. This is best communicated through gestures

rather than words.

This Father’s Day, I ask God to grant me the courage to keep my mouth shut and

demonstrate to our kids how much I believe in them.
