From Fr. Mike Gabriel
As you may know, we are amid a Jubilee Year. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do a pilgrimage to Rome with a group of parishioners from St. Gertrude’s. You will hear more about their experience on the pilgrimage in the coming weeks. I must be honest; it was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. Yet, even in the midst of challenges, we overcame them one by one and made it to Rome.
Pope Francis’ call is to all of us, regardless of whether we can make a pilgrimage to Italy and Rome or not, is to be pilgrims of hope. All of us, as pilgrims, are on a journey, despite times of great challenges, uncertainty, and fear, but we believe that there is hope.
In our society or world at large, it seems at times we are turning away from values and virtues of faith, hope, and love. We are confronted with statistics that paint a grim picture of church. Attendance is down in all churches, religious affiliation is even lower, but there still is hope.
Don’t believe me? Look at the faces of our catechumens. Last Sunday, we had the First Scrutiny. All of us at the 8:00 am mass were honored to profess the Nicene Creed with them. After the dismissal, I found myself overwhelmed with hope, knowing that soon we will watch them be washed in the waters of Baptism, sealed with the Holy Spirit through Confirmation, and nourished at the Eucharistic table for the first time at Easter. That’s hope.
As we continue our Lenten Journey, I want to remind you and encourage you to journey with other parishioners at Stations of the Cross, Simple Suppers, Music, Stillness and Solidarity, morning mass, Saturday reconciliation, or our Deanery Reconciliation April 14th at Mother of God, St. Ita's campus. These opportunities are for our growth and give us and others hope.
A great big thank you to Fr. Bradley, Fr. Winters, and Fr. Bernardi for handling the sacramental duties, and the pastoral staff for the day-to-day tasks while I was on the pilgrimage.
Congratulations to all the Confirmation students who received the sacrament on March 18.
Have a great week! Repent and believe in the Gospel. May God’s peace and joy find a deep place within you.
In God’s Love,
Fr. Mike

Commonweal Dialogue is This Sunday, March 30
The next meeting of Commonweal Dialog will take place in Ministry Center, 6214 N. Glenwood Ave., on Sunday, March 30 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
The topic will be: Christian Resistance against Political Attacks on the Central Tenets of Christianity.
Many of the cuts made or proposed by the Trump administration hurt the most vulnerable among us, including cuts to Medicaid and to USAID (which provides substantial funding for Catholic Relief Services.) The Dean of Yale Divinity School, Gregory E. Sterling, argues in a recent op-ed that the cuts to USAID are “Anti-Christian at the Core.” How can Catholics across the political divide bear witness to the Christian values that are under attack? How can we join together as Catholic Christians to influence policy on these vital matters?
Light refreshments---afternoon tea/coffee--will be served. If you would like to bring a snack to share, it will be gratefully received. Please join us for a cordial and revitalizing
conversation on a difficult topic in good company. Feel free to invite your family and friends from St. Gertrude’s or from some other parish or from no parish. All are welcome.

Another Festive Brewed at St. Gertrude's in the Books!
Thanks so much to the many parishioners who braved the dreary weather and joined us in the Social Hall after the Masses on March 23. It was so lovely to see everyone and enjoy each other's company, beverages, and treats.
Please consider joining us for our next Brewed at St. Gertrude parish hospitality event on Sunday, April 13th after the 10:30 am Masses!

What are the Scrutinies?
This Sunday, we continue the “Scrutinies.” These are special rites for the women and men who have been meeting weekly to explore their faith and their movement into the Catholic Church on Holy Saturday.
On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent each year, we call these candidates and catechumens forward and invite them to reflect upon their past lives and commit themselves to repentance as they continue this spiritual journey to a new life. We celebrate these rites publicly in order for all of us, already baptized and confirmed Catholics, to reflect upon our own lives and how we have or have not lived up to the promises made at our own baptisms.
And, like these searchers, we also are invited to reject whatever has been sinful in our lives, leading us away from the Lord. We ask God’s help to cleanse us of our sins and follow the true path of Our Lord’s Gospel.
