Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Appeal is This Weekend

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Each May, our hearts turn with gratitude to the mothers and mother figures whose love has shaped our lives. It is a moment to pause, to remember, and to honor the steadfast witness of those who have nurtured us in faith and in hope.

May is also the month when, as an archdiocese, we lift up the vital ministry of our partner, Catholic Charities. Their work—rooted in the Gospel and animated by the compassion of Christ—stands as a living sign of the Church’s commitment to accompany mothers and families in need. When we support mothers, we strengthen the fabric of our communities, and the mercy we extend today echoes across generations.

Your generosity to the Mother’s Day Collection for Catholic Charities sustains this essential mission. For more than a century, Catholic Charities has served as the Archdiocese’s hands and feet in caring for our neighbors throughout Cook and Lake counties, responding to the hardships faced by nearly 300,000 people each year. This extraordinary reach is possible only because of the faithful support you so consistently provide.

Each year, I ask our parishes to stand with Catholic Charities, and once again I invite you to give with a generous heart. Thank you for your steadfast commitment and your willingness to walk with those who rely on us. Together, we make present the love of Christ, who calls us to bring hope where it is most needed.

As St. Paul reminds us in Romans 5:5, “And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.” May that same Spirit guide us as we continue this important work.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Cardinal Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago

Happy Mother's Day!
To the Moms Who Are

To the Moms who are struggling, to those filled with incandescent joy.

To the Moms who are remembering children who have died, and pregnancies that miscarried.

To the Moms who decided other parents were the best choice for their babies, to the Moms who adopted those kids and loved them fierce.

To those experiencing frustration or desperation in infertility.

To those who knew they never wanted kids, and the ways they have contributed to our shared world.

To those who mothered colleagues, mentees, neighborhood kids, and anyone who needed it.

To those remembering Moms no longer with us.

To those moving forward from Moms who did not show love, or hurt those they should have cared for.

Today is a day to honor the unyielding love and care for others we call 'Motherhood,'

wherever we have found it and in whatever ways we have found to cultivate it within

ourselves.

listed in chronological order

First Communion is Saturday, May 9

Congratulations to the children from our parish’s Religious Education program and Northside Catholic Academy who celebrated their First Communion—a joyful and celebratory moment in their faith journey!

We are so proud of the children from our Religious Education and NCA communities, Holy Child Jesus, St. Jerome, Mary Mother of God, and St. Gertrude, who worked so hard in preparation for this special day. We are blessed to have their loving presence in our parish community and are especially grateful to the educators from NCA and the teachers from our Religious Education Program for their kind and patient instruction.

Please continue to keep the First Communicants—and their families—in your prayers as they receive this sacrament for the first time and experience the unfolding mystery of Holy Communion, continuing to grow in faith and love.

Care for Real Collection is May 23-24

St. Gertrude will host a collection drive for Care for Real on May 23-24. Our Care for Real collections takes place on the first and fourth weekend of each month.

SNAP is one of the most effective ways to address food insecurity in the United States. However, as eligibility requirements change, many of our neighbors—especially seniors and others without exemptions—are at risk of losing their benefits. New requirements to work or volunteer 80 hours per month and report this to the state can be difficult to meet, increasing the risk of food insecurity.

As a result, Care for Real anticipates a growing need for their services. For more information, including current needs and ways to give, please visit https://linktr.ee/cfrchicago or follow their Facebook and Instagram pages.

We are grateful for your continued generosity in supporting Care for Real as they provide food and essential supplies to neighbors in need.

Gym Mass Schedule: Combined Mass in Church on May 24 (No Gym Mass)

On Sunday, May 24, there is no Gym Mass. Please join us for our 10:30 am mass in church.

The final Gym Mass of the school year will be held on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21.

Brewed at St. Gertrude Planned for May 31

Make plans to stay after the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, May 31 for “Brewed at St. Gertrude,” our monthly gathering for coffee and community in the Social Hall. It’s a wonderful chance to slow down, connect, and enjoy some time together.

We’ll have a selection of pastries along with coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. Everyone is welcome—whether you’ve been part of the parish for years or are just getting to know the community, we’d love to have you join us!

Growing in Faith

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments…”

As a parent raising four kids, my initial reaction is to chuckle when I read this. If this is the measure of love, I might be in trouble! It often feels like my kids don’t “listen” or “follow” what they’re told, whether it’s our home’s rules, how to care for themselves and others, or how to move through the world.

But then I read more closely and notice Jesus doesn’t just say “listen”. Or “follow”. He says, “keep” my commandments.

So, I pay more attention. To the teacher who says what a good helper my kid is, even when they won’t always help at home. To the older sibling offering to play with the younger one, even when they can’t agree on a game. To the article my kid writes on the value of the church community that has taught him “All Are Welcome”, even when he may not get to mass.

And I realize my kids are, in fact, “keeping” what they’ve been taught. Values that I “keep” from my own family, whose own values were rooted in those very commandments Jesus spoke of. And when I look at the state of our world right now, I find reassurance in the fact that, even when we may not always get it right, if we can heed the words of Jesus to “keep” my commandments, then we, too, can come through when it matters most, rooting ourselves in the love that Jesus spoke of.

Lending Closet Information: Please Make an Appointment!

St. Gertrude Parish’s Heart to Heart program

continues to offer compassionate support through its Medical Lending Closet, available by

appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This approach allows the team to provide thoughtful, individualized

assistance to each person seeking or donating equipment.

Items available through the Lending Closet include standard walkers, rollators, crutches, wheelchairs, portable commodes, toilet safety rails, bed rails, shower seats, and a selection of medical supplies. These resources are offered to help ease the burden of obtaining necessary equipment and to ensure that members of our community have what they need to maintain comfort, safety, and dignity.

To schedule an appointment or to learn more about available items or donations, please call 773.973.5464. If you or someone you know could benefit from this ministry—or if you have equipment to share—please consider reaching out.

In Need of Communion? Our Ministers of Care Can Help

For those who are unable to attend Mass regularly, our Ministers of Care offer a meaningful connection to parish life. These specially trained parishioners bring Holy Communion along with the prayers and presence of our community to those who are homebound or ill.

Through their visits, they share not only the Eucharist but also companionship and spiritual support, reminding each person that they remain a valued and connected member of our parish family.

If you or someone you know would like to receive Communion at home, please contact Sr. Susan at squaintance@stgertrudechicago.org.
